7.68 more miles on the Oak Leaf Trail

Happy Sunday–what’s left of it at least!

I made french toast for us this morning. Mine was topped with nutella, raspberries, and powdered sugar. Yummy!

Since the weather has been gorgeous here this weekend, Craig and I finally went on our first bike ride together of the summer.

I tried the Gatorade G Series Fit series today. I will get it free via rebate from Walgreens, so I figured it was worth trying and reviewing for the blog.

G Series Fit

First, I started with one prime bar since I knew we were not going too far on our ride. It was tasty.

We loaded the bikes onto Craig’s car and went to Silver Spring Drive to leave off where we ended our ride last summer on the Oak Leaf trail. Craig wants to ride the entire trail slowly over the years, which is fine with me because it also forces us to bike in areas we might not necessarily choose to, like today’s ride. It was nice, don’t get me wrong, it just wasn’t the most scenic (except if you count the bridge with the train above it).

The only snag we hit today was some water on the trail and we had to go around it by getting on some city sidewalks. Right before I took this photo, there was a mama duck with her babies in the water and they were so cute! I am sad I didn’t get them on camera.

We took a break at mile 4 and I tried some of the Melon Pear gatorade drink. Both Craig and I really liked this flavor.

However, this is kind of gross-my honest opinion: drinking gatorade in general brings to mind the awful colonoscopies I have had to have for the last three years. Psychologically, I hate the prep part of the colonoscopy and drinking gatorade or powerade is crucial to keep electrolytes in my body, I know this. You just get to a point where your stomach is so full and you can’t drink any more of the stuff. Drinking it today still conjured up those bad memories.

I also munched on a few almonds.

Craig (unintentionally) looking pretty serious as he ate a cherry pie larabar for some fuel.

We biked 7.68 miles in the end. Not bad!

Once home, I tried the Mixed Berry recover drink and it was my least favorite of the Gatorade G series fit products. The flavor was just off. I couldn’t even drink any more because it was so gross.

After having pizza for lunch, I was tired so I laid on the couch for an hour and crashed. Then I just read a book and magazine outside, made salsa, and did some housework.

Making salsa seems to be our new Sunday night tradition! This batch turned out better thanks to lime juice and fresh garlic. I added some lime to my woodchuck cider and it hit the spot. A nice summery treat!

Time to prep for the week ahead! I am hoping to get more sleep this week in general. Must get to bed earlier from now on.

Later!

Runner’s high

I definitely got a runner’s high tonight after running 2 miles on the treadmill and walking 1/2 mile. What a good feeling! I told my husband that running is starting to clear my mind more than meditation. It definitely helps me sort my thoughts about the day out.

Once home, I showered, changed into my jammies and iced using paradice ice packs.

Rewind to this morning…

Breakfast was chobani greek yogurt with almonds and honey. I realize I have been pretty boring with my food lately, but I am trying to eat up what is in our fridge and not waste it!

Lunch was a ham sandwich, applesauce, a clementine, some pita chips and two girl scout peanut butter sandwich cookies. I realize that sounds like a lot of food! I sort of snacked on the pita chips prior to lunch though. By the looks of this very brown themed lunch, I need to go grocery shopping for some veggies soon.

My afternoon snack was a raisin bran vitatop and a half a cup of decaf coffee. The coffee tasted yummy, especially because it was a dreary day in Milwaukee and coffee comforts me on rainy days. I really liked the raisin bran flavor–so good!

Dinner was late, when I got back from the gym. I needed something quick but relatively nutritious, so I cooked up my go to meal of late, pierogis and brussell sprouts.

I cooked up this meal quickly while watching Food Revolution. Jamie always inspires me and makes me laugh, especially when he shows up in a tomato costume.

Rumor on the radio today was that he does eventually get into LA schools and the LAUSD gives in. It’s about frickin time!

Anyone else here this shocking food news today? The NY Times headline read: “Vegan Promoter Uses Photos of Meat and Dairy items and fury follows.” How disappointing for the readers of VegNews.

Hope your Tuesday was fantastic!

Aaah, sleep, I love you

I slept in this morning and it was glorious. After a week of feeling really tired as a result of not getting enough sleep, it felt so good to sleep until 8:45. I forced myself to stay in bed that long because I have to stay up until midnight for work. The kitties were all cuddled up next to me and it’s hard to get up with them in our bed.

I lounged around a bit this morning, ate breakfast and then finally got myself to the gym.

Breakfast was Chobani non-fat plain yogurt with sliced almonds, chia seeds, and honey.

IMG_4201

At the gym, I lifted a few weights, biked for 20 minutes and then ran for 13 minutes. I pushed myself pretty hard on the treadmill and did some intervals to mimic running outside. I ran into a co-worker there and his talking about the event I have to work tonight kind of put me in a sour mood. I just want it to be over with.

I quickly showered and then made myself a Morningstar black bean burger on an Arnold’s Thin for lunch. I had red grapes on the side.

And now I better get ready for work. Have a great Friday afternoon/night!

Snowy afternoon

The roads were nice and quiet driving into downtown Milwaukee this morning. For those of you who were off, hope you had a nice day. Maybe you even volunteered your time in honor of MLK’s philosophies. A lot of people seemed to be off for MLK day. We consider MLK day a minor holiday at my work and I earn holiday hours, but everyone seems to go in.

I started my sleepy Monday with Kashi Autumn Wheat cereal and coffee.

Snack at work was a handful of raw almonds and another cup of coffee. I was tired this morning because I didn’t get to bed on time last night. Blame sleeping in on the weekend for making my schedule wacky. I’ll get back on schedule tonight and read before falling asleep around 9:45.

Lunch was a Morningstar black bean burger, a Stonyfield Strawberries and Cream yogurt (yum, loved this flavor) and some grape tomatoes. I still had a craving for something sweet, so I had a sugar free caramel pudding.

Loved this quote on the inside of my Stonyfield lid. Reminds me of the portion distortion class I attended in the fall at the YMCA.

I wish I had been off today because on my way home, my little Honda and I had to battle the snow storm. I went really slow and took the freeway home because it was much clearer than our sloppy side roads. My car just doesn’t like the slushy roads.

Once home, I shoveled so my husband could pull in the driveway and then he finished the rest when he got home. I was hungry for dinner and it had to be quick, so there went my plans for quinoa with tofu, chickpeas, tomatoes, etc. I made some fettuccine alfredo and had carrots and grape tomatoes with it.

I rested a bit, did some dishes and then did an indoor workout with EA Sports Active 2 on the Wii. There was no way I was heading back out to the YMCA on a night like tonight.

Time to read some blogs, the Larsson book (it’s getting really good now) and get to bed early tonight.

Conquering tofu

I conquered my fear of making tofu! I like tofu and have had it several times in restaurants. I just had a fear of pressing the water out of it properly and cooking it. With the help of Emily from The Daily Garnish, I was able to easily follow her directions and make my own yummy tofu for lunch. She has a How To: A Tofu Tutorial posted on her blog, but I was having trouble posting the exact link, so you can search her site if you are interested in her detailed instructions.

Dessert was a chocolate chip cookie, naturally.

Angie and I had fun at the gym this morning. We did 23 minutes on the elliptical & a full circuit of weights.

When I got home from the gym, I was hungry! I snacked on a few (well maybe it was more than a few) of these addictive “Food Should Taste Good” Sweet Potato tortilla chips. Through a Facebook promotion, I was able to get a coupon for a free bag via snail mail.

I ran a bunch of errands in the afternoon, but accomplished a lot, so that felt good. One of my biggest accomplishments was picking up three framed pictures from Target to put above our couch. Craig and I have been searching for something to replace a very 1970’s brown picture with (I detest this picture, as it’s just depressing in appearance and so 70’s). I saw these pictures at Target yesterday and took photos of them to show Craig. At last, we both agreed on a style of a picture we liked!

IMG_0006

IMG_0007

I brought them home and my sister-in-law was over at our house. She took one look at them and said they were very much our style. They kind of have an Indian style to them and we love all things India.

I also picked up a lot around the house, organized, etc. because that is one of my goals for the new year. I am generally a very clean person, but organization is sometimes a problem for me.

Time to work on writing my goals out a little more. I am taking my time, as I figure they didn’t need to be posted today and could wait until later this weekend.

Tomorrow, I am going to do my usual Sunday paper and CBS Sunday Morning thing, then go to Body Pump with Angie for the new release! Can’t wait to see what the new music is!

Lisa Pizza

I am turning into a pizza, hence my title of Lisa Pizza, which is also what my brother used to call me (besides mona Lisa). I have had pizza the last three days. Is that weird? At least I have had small quantities. Blame it on the free food, which occurred on Saturday night and tonight.

I also am slightly addicted to plain greek Oikos yogurt with sliced almonds and honey. No variety in my diet lately!

Breakfast today was Banana Nut Cheerios and coffee.

Snack was almond poppyseed bread and stollen with another coffee. I think winter is causing me to crave carbs.

IMG_0005

Lunch was what else, leftover pizza from yesterday. The rest had a very orange theme and I didn’t realize it until I laid out my lunch for my photo: baby carrots, peach Chobani yogurt and clementines.

I couldn’t resist having this adorable snowman cookie for an afternoon snack. I went to a meeting at work and they had different holiday cookies out, so I grabbed Mr. Snowman.

I knew I would need a little snack before boot camp class later in the day.

My friend Angie and I tried a new Boot Camp class tonight. We met through Boot Camp class with the recreation department. I think we took about 4 consecutive boot camps together until we called it quits with the rec dept. classes last Monday. Since I belong to the YMCA and she will soon, we tried out the Bodyblast Boot Camp this evening. It was a great class and very similar to what we did in our other boot camp, except that we ran for 10 minutes straight, which I liked a lot. I missed running. I haven’t done it much since I sprained my right ankle this fall. The teacher was nice and also a former Blugold (my alma mater is the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and they have this weird, fake mascot, the Blugold). I’ll definitely go back to the Y boot camp. Too bad the nice teacher is leaving though and there will be a new one. I am sure he’ll be fine.

Post boot camp snack was a banana and NuttZo for protein.

Dinner was dare I say it, pizza. My husband got it free from work. Seriously, this is why I blog because I notice these strange eating habits of mine. When I was a kid, I did this with yogurt and other foods. My parents would always say, “aren’t you sick of that?!” but I would tell them when I got sick of a certain food.

pizza

I am not feeling so great tonight. I hope I am not coming down with a cold before the holidays. I keep getting the chills, have a headache and was coughing most of the day. Time to lay down on the couch under a blanket and rest.

TGIT

(I started writing this during lunch yesterday, so I will just leave the title and references to Thursday on here. TGIF now for the rest of the world!)

TGIT=Thank god it’s Thursday, which is what I will be saying for the next three weeks! I am looking forward to having the next three Fridays in a row off. Tomorrow, I want to get some more Christmas shopping done and also just relax a bit. I may or may not set the oven for an hour and clean as much as I can in the house.

For breakfast, I had a bowl of Oikos plain greek non-fat yogurt with honey and sliced almonds. I can’t get enough of almonds. Maybe that is a sign of a deficiency. I know that my magnesium levels are low. Maybe it’s the calcium in almonds that my body needs?

yogurt with chia seeds, almonds and honey

I had almond poppyseed bread again for a snack at work.

Lunch was what I had for dinner yesterday since it was easy to pack up leftovers and put them in the fridge to grab for lunch today! Love when I can do that! So it was brussel sprouts and two slices of pizza again. I had some Newman’s Own Organics chocolate creme cookies for dessert.

brussel sprouts and pizza

Dinner was a veggie masala TJ burger on an Arnold’s Thin. I had some sliced red peppers on the side.

Dessert was a pb dough ball.

Thursday night yoga class was exactly what I needed. I really need to do more yoga at the Y, as I love it. I just wish more of the classes worked with my schedule. A Sunday morning yoga would be perfect, but for now, they don’t offer it. My body felt very stiff tonight. Maybe it is all of the stress lately. My right side especially hurt during the many lunges and hip stretches. It hurt so good to stretch!

I wanted to post this yesterday, but stress got the better of me and I fell asleep on the couch at 8:30 and then went to bed at 10 something. My body just shuts down at the end of the week.

My second try at Zumba

Today was much happier than yesterday. I only cried once when my dad wrote me an e-mail that said he still is in the habit of turning on the light for Garfield at night. :(

I tried Zumba for the second time tonight. It was a good class again. I think I actually did worse this time trying to keep up with the steps. I didn’t have anyone in front of me directly who was coordinated that I could follow. Next time, I won’t be late and forced to go into the corner of the gym. While doing Zumba, I was thinking to myself, “this is my fun workout of the week.” Yoga is my calming workout, body pump is strengthening and challenging and so is boot camp. I spoke to an older lady next to me at one point and she said to me in her thick foreign accent, “I like this class. It is fun. I could be on the treadmill for an hour and time goes so slowly. With this, time goes by so quickly and it’s fun.” She must have read my mind. I agreed completely.

Breakfast was Kashi Autumn Wheat. I figure it’s “almost” winter (next week is when the season technically starts, even though it’s freezing cold where I live) and I should be eating up anything labeled autumn!

Autumn Wheat and coffee

My morning snack was half of a sprite bottle and almond poppy seed bread baked by my mama. I only drink soda occasionally. Sometimes when my stomach is bugging me, I crave a sprite.

almond poppyseed bread, sprite

Lunch was a NuttZo and strawberry jelly sandwich on wheat, Oikos Stonyfield plain yogurt that I mixed with sliced almonds and local honey from Oconomowoc. I am on an almond kick lately. I also had some homemade Christmas cookies for dessert. One was a mint and chocolate kind my mom made for us and then my peanut butter dough balls.

Lunch on 12-15-10

Craig made yummy Trader Joe’s 4 Formaggi pizza for dinner and it was ready when I got home from Zumba, so that was a nice surprise. I had two slices and made some brussel sprouts spiced with three different Penzey’s spices.

Dessert was a dough ball, of course!

This is how our cats look in the morning, waiting for their “food food.” We trained them to know the word food and anytime we say something that even sounds like it, they freak out. They swirl around our feet in the morning until Craig or I announce “food food” and they run to their food bowls.

cats in AM

For once I am not blogging an hour before my bedtime and I actually have more time tonight to relax and read. My mom gave me a whole bunch of magazines yesterday, so I am going to chill out with those on the couch.

Goodbye Garfield

On my way home from work tonight, I called my dad and he told me to call him back when I got home. I said, “did something bad happen?” and he said, “just call me when you get home.” I replied back, “is it Garfield, did he die?” And my dad said yes. I knew his time was coming soon, as with my other bird, I took one look at Garfield at Thanksgiving and knew he was at the end of his life.

Garfield is the last of my childhood birds that was left. He lived with my parents, but I truly enjoyed visiting with him when I went to their house. He died this afternoon and will be missed. I grew up with cockatiel birds, 5 of them in fact over time. I had Garfield since I was 9 or 10. He was originally called Felix and I loved Garfield the cat, so I named him another cat cartoon name. Rest in peace little birdie, I’ll miss your chirping, tough guy bites, enthusiasm for fresh bread, love of baths in the bathroom sink, pretty pretty bird songs and you looking at yourself in the mirror or lamp base.

Fitness goals achieved since October 1st

Happy hump day (evening)! The work week is nearly over!

Breakfast was a Christmas themed cup of coffee, TJ’s non-fat plain yogurt, greek non-fat yogurt, almonds, the rest of the Door County Cherry Jam (sad face), honey and chia seeds.

Snack was one of the 100 calorie Craisin packs I got at the walk on Sunday. I love the pomegranate ones compared to these, but in general, they have too much sugar! Oh and I had a cup of Earl Grey to warm me up. I had chills at work this morning!

Lunch was this:

A veggie sandwich on a plain bagel with spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, hummus and a little bit of mayo. I had some grapes for dessert, plus half of the pita chips featured in the photo. For an afternoon snack, I had the gala apple pictured yesterday.

After work, I was still not feeling great but then that cleared up and it was time to hit the gym. I stretched (still a bit sore from Monday, but not too bad), did 17 minutes on the treadmill, some running and mostly walking. Then I did 22 minutes on the elliptical and pushed myself extra hard on that. Next it was lifting weights with the Fitlinxx program tracking me. When I was all done, the Y employee who trained me on the Fitlinxx had left me an e-mail in the system saying that I was keeping up with my fitness goals of 1-3 times of strength training with Fitlinxx per week. Yay! I have been doing about 3-4. He recommended 3 times a week for toning up. I have gained a little weight from strength training, but that is to be expected.

Kind of a boring post today–sorry! Not too much exciting around here on my hump day.
