A Milwaukee blogger brunch

Karis hosted a lovely brunch at her house on Sunday morning. Two other Milwaukee area bloggers, Erica and Alysha also attended!

Karis is a typical Virgo and very organized (I am not a typical Virgo since I am not as organized at home). She had a menu written out with ingredients and the source. It was also sort of a joke and you can read about it on her blog post.

We started with fresh homemade cinnamon-sugar donuts, which were delicious! My husband saw the picture I took of them and couldn’t believe Karis made homemade donuts. He wouldn’t let me get a donut pan though, however. Silly husband, as he would benefit directly from it more than I would.

While Karis cooked, I enjoyed watching her cats, Merlot and Chianti, be mischievous.

The other fantastic brunch items we had were Vanilla Chobani greek yogurt with berries, nuts, coconut and granola.

After we were done eating, we went outside for the photo and admired Karis and Chris’s container garden, which is doing quite well.

I proceeded to admire her cats. I love that her cats have a little area to sit outside in. Ours don’t go outside and they would probably beg to go out all the time.

It was a great morning and afternoon spent with fun and friendly bloggers! I am so thankful for blogging as it has connected me with new people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

Arms & abs

Despite my injury, we went to the gym yesterday and I was determined to get my heart rate up by doing weights and abs. I was successful with my goal and happy to get moving, even if it wasn’t by doing any cardio. I focused on my arms and abs since anything with my legs was pretty much not possible (except leg press with my good leg and one hip exercise).

I ate steel cut oats with berries while reading Whole Living before we went to the gym.

I snacked on some greek yogurt when we got home from the gym and then I had a big salad for lunch. I added broccoli, red peppers, tomatoes, cottage cheese and mozarella cheese to a bed of spinach. I mentioned my renewed love for cottage cheese in Friday’s post. The other thing I’ve been doing lately is adding it to salads since it’s something I discovered from our salad bar at work.

Topped it all with Green Goddess Annie’s dressing. Not quite as good as just the “Goddess dressing” but it was still tasty.

Dessert was a Reese’s egg. I hadn’t had one this year, so I was tempted by the 70% off sale on them at Target this week.

Yesterday’s photo a day challenge included capturing “how I was feeling.” Instead of a semi-sad face portrait, Craig suggested I take a picture of my foot since I was feeling defeated with my injury. It was a nice day out and I couldn’t be active. :(

While making dinner, I drank some Titanic Lakefront Brewery beer. It’s been in our fridge since 2009, so it was about time to drink it. I tend to drink beer more when the temps get warm, but otherwise I am more of a wine girl.

Anyway, I figured it was also time to drink it since this weekend is the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

I cooked up some quinoa for us for dinner. I added tofu topped with soy sauce to my dish with roma tomatoes. Craig added chicken pieces to his.

I’ve missed taking pictures with my Canon DSLR, so I got it out this weekend and will try to get back into using it more often instead of just for special occasions like vacations. Inevitability, I shot some cute pictures of the cats, so I’ll share those. If you hate cats, I’m sorry. :)

I didn’t go anywhere yesterday and felt pretty sleepy all day. We’re going to get out of the house after lunch to head to Penzey’s (free spice redemption, yay), Starbucks to get a free drink by handing in an empty bag and to Barnes and Noble to look around. I hope the storms that are supposed to come through this afternoon aren’t too bad! They were really loud last night.

Last day off

The last two days have gone by slowly, but today flew by, which figures since it’s the last day of vacation for a while. Boo. :( I love being off of work!

Craig and I went to the gym this morning and I’ll miss my morning workouts. I did the elliptical, some ab moves with the swiss ball and some barbell moves that I learned in Body Pump.

When we got home, Craig had the brilliant idea to make breakfast burritos for lunch so we could eat a fair amount of protein after our workout. Yum!

Other than that, we went grocery shopping and now we are set with food for the week.

And then I fell asleep while cuddling Karma. Napping is glorious.

I ventured out to TJ Maxx and didn’t find anything. The store was so empty compared to how it was well stocked during the holidays. No luck in clothes, purses or shoes. Bummer.

I’m going to watch a movie called The Beautiful Truth tonight. It’s about the Gerson therapy. I learned a little about it from Foodmatters and am interested in learning more. Craig’s friend recommended the documentary.

Cravings

Happy Wednesday! I failed to blog last night because I took a nap on the couch and then we watched the movie Salt (which was really good).

I started my day with some Kashi Toasted Berry Crumble Go Lean Crisp cereal. This flavor is growing on me now.

At work, I snacked on some donut holes and had a latte. The volunteer that helped me all day brought in the donut holes and while I usually resist such temptations, I couldn’t today due to that time of the month. Sorry if it’s TMI, but that will explain the rest of my eats today and probably my need to nap so much over the last week.

Lunch was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, carrots, and an athenos honey flavored greek yogurt.

After work, I went to a store to use up some coupons that expired today. On the way there, I knew I would have to go to Kopps custard for a big cheeseburger to get some iron in my body. Blame that time of the month again.

We had no chocolate in the house and I had to resort to eating chocolate chips. I was desperate!

I went to the gym later at night, but it felt good to get my body moving anyway. I ran on the treadmill, then walked when I got a side ache and managed to fit in a full circuit of weights.

Well, it’s late and I better get ready for bed soon.

But, I can’t end without saying Happy Birthday to my favorite cat children! They are the big 5 years old today! :) I know, I am a crazy cat lady, but I don’t really care.

Night all!

Back to work

I had a very good Monday back at work. Didn’t come back to too much and got a lot done.

Breakfast today was stove top oats mixed with flax seeds. I topped it with Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut butter. I decided to try a packet of this vs. buying Nutella. I really liked Justin’s flavor (less sweet than Nutella, which is a good thing in my book) and the texture was nice (more gritty than Nutella).

I made myself another cup of coffee at work and snacked on some barbecue flavored Soy Crisps from Newman’s Own Organics.

I ate lunch really late because of a meeting. My breakfast and snack allowed me to hold off a little on my lunch time.

Lunch was tofu and veggies leftovers, two clementines, a Stonyfield Cherry Vanilla yogurt and two chocolate chip cookies. Through blogging, I realize I have a big appetite for lunch and vary my lunches a little more than my dinners with the different food groups. I eat more calories during lunch than any other meal. Does anyone else eat this much for lunch on a regular basis?

After work, I went to Bodyblast Boot Camp at the YMCA and we had a new teacher. He had some good stations set up. My favorite was the punching bag and the kettle bells. Unlike other boot camps, we got to choose the stations we wanted to go to and there were about 8-10 set up. I liked having the choice.

Dinner was a whole wheat tortilla with pinto beans, spinach leaves, tomatoes, salsa, Frank’s Red Hot, and a bit of colby jack cheese.

I had a banana with the rest of Justin’s for dessert (and an unpictured cookie).

I need to try to make some of this with the food processor! The ingredients are pretty simple.

Recap of Friday

I didn’t get to blog what I ate yesterday so here it is.

Breakfast is not pictured because I ate it at work. We had a free breakfast as part of the employee of the year award presentation. My co-worker who works in the cubicle next to me won! Anyway, that was probably the most full I have been from a breakfast in ages. I had fruit, cheesy potatoes, two sausages and then the catering person put a HUGE pile of quiche on my plate. I ate it all and I don’t know why. I guess I would have felt rude in front of my co-workers if I didn’t finish, which is silly.

As a result of such a big breakfast, I didn’t eat lunch until after 1 p.m. I did end up making the Brie, Apple and Arugula Quesadilla the night before and packed it up for lunch. It was good leftover, but better fresh. I had some Newman’s Own Organic graham cookies with it, but didn’t eat the Chobani pictured.
