Greek yogurt comparison: Chobani vanilla vs. The Greek Gods

I tried a new brand of Greek yogurt for breakfast today. My sister-in-law works close to a Woodman’s and she offered to pick me up anything I needed. I got excited because I had just run out of Chobani last week and needed a big tub again desperately. Unfortunately, Woodman’s was out of the plain, so she got me a vanilla. She also mentioned the Greek gods brand over the phone and I figured I would just try their plain. When she brought the yogurts over yesterday, I did a quick comparion of the nutritional stats and saw why the Greek gods yogurt was cheaper.

The protein was only 4g per 4 oz serving compared to Chobani’s whopping 22 grams per 8 oz serving. I may pay extra for the Chobani, but it’s worth it to me, especially because I eat a mostly vegetarian diet. Also check out the fat content in each. 0 for Chobani’s 8 ounces, 11 grams per serving in the Greek Gods’ 4 ounce serving. Sure the sugar is higher in the Chobani, but that is because it is the vanilla flavored kind.

So, I piled strabwerries, raspberries and Bonne Maman wild blueberry preserves on top. Because I am feeling sick lately, I couldn’t eat the whole bowl. Boo. I don’t think it was the protein filling me up or anything.

The verdict? The Greek gods was just ok. I still prefer the consistency and flavor of the Chobani greek yogurt. Can plain yogurt have a “flavor?” I guess so in my opinion!

Lunch was a salad with grape tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese and lots of tofu on top. I also had a string cheese. I couldn’t eat the clementine so I saved it for my afternoon snack.

My Brooks Defyance shoes were over a year old and granted I didn’t do that much running in them over the last year, I did wear them to the gym, wore them on walks and probably while biking and playing tennis last summer.

I decided to go back to my old favorite from when I worked at a running shoe store in California! I got the Asics Cumulus 12. Since I have knee pain occasionally when running, I thought the extra cushioning would help me out. I wore them on the carpet and then for a bit on our kitchen tile and they felt so supportive and cushiony (is that a word?). I know that the feeling of the new cushion does wear out pretty quickly, but I remember that feeling lasting a while in my old pair of Asics.

I thought I would go to the gym tonight, but then it was getting late and I was hungry. Craig was making a burrito, so I also decided to do the same and used chicken, rice, greek gods yogurt instead of sour cream, cheese, Penzey’s Arizona Dreaming spice, and Frank’s Red Hot.

After eating too much food and with my stomach still giving me problems today, I decided to skip the gym and get out in nature with my husband. We went on a 25 minute walk around the neighborhood and covered a little over a mile. It felt so good to be outside, even though I missed doing my routine at the gym.

It’s time to go read blogs and some magazines! I am trying to power through my magazine pile and I managed to clear three from my huge stack over the weekend.

Tomorrow, I only have a half day of work because I have to go to Craig’s work for our annual Health Risk Assessment appointments. We get a discount on our insurance as a result, so it’s a must! After, I’m getting my haircut and a partial foil done! Can’t wait because my hair is at that nasty feeling stage–thick and the ends feel dry.

A Case of the Mondays

I woke up and had a serious case of the Mondays. Not only was I not psyched to go back to work, but it snowed overnight and I had to wipe off my car.

Yes, it is April 18 and this is how things go in Wisconsin. When is spring coming?

Breakfast was Post Great Grains cereal and coffee.

Snack at work was peppermint tea and part of a Racine Kringle.

Lunch was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on an Arnold’s Thin, a mango chobani, and a clementine. Oh and I almost forgot dessert because it’s unpictured. I had a girl scout peanut butter sandwich cookie.

I didn’t feel like cooking tonight and I never have to convince Craig to go out to eat, so off we went to Cousin’s for a quick meal. I had the $2.99 special of barbecue ham and cheddar. It was ok. The cheap subs never have a lot of meat on them.

I went to the gym late, around 7 p.m., but did manage to stay for an hour. I did a full circuit of weights and logged 2.09 miles on the elliptical while watching Property Virgins on HGTV. That show makes me look forward to looking for a new house someday, but also makes me dread it! My priorities will definitely be a bigger kitchen with lots of counter space, laundry on the main floor, lots of natural light and a two car garage. Not too much to ask for, huh? Aaah, a girl can dream about not having to wipe snow off her car in the middle of April and just pulling out of the garage instead!

Even though I had a serious case of the Mondays, seeing Craig at the end of the day, playing with the cute kitties, and working out always puts me in a good mood. The workout alone changed my attitude immensely. Hooray!

I’m going to bed and hoping I’m in a better mood tomorrow. I should be, because I decided to take off on Friday and that means I only have three more days of work left! :)

Dinner and book discussion

Last night, I didn’t blog because I went from work, home to meditate and then to meet Karis for dinner at Noodles and Company. This was our first time meeting in person after writing e-mails back and forth over the last couple of months. How fun to meet another blogger in person, especially because we are interested in a lot of the same things! She even was sweet enough to bring me two books I am really looking forward to reading: A Year of Sundays and A Homemade Life.

After a great dinner discussion, we headed over to the New Berlin Public Library for their book discussion on Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.

It was fun to hear what others, especially those coming from a different demographic, had to say about their impressions of the book. What I took away from the book was that growing as much food as you can helps the environment, your budget, your piece of mind and it’s a fun process. I am looking forward to hopefully expanding our patio container garden a bit this summer. Oh and I can’t wait to try some of her recipes inspired by what she grew on their farm.

I wasn’t too hungry this morning so I had Post Great Grains Cranberry Almond Crunch cereal and some coffee.

I was tired again today so I had an almond latte and some raw almonds for a snack mid-morning.

Lunch was a pb & j sandwich. I used Smart Balance peanut butter and it’s really yummy.

After work, I meditated and snacked on half of this KIND bar.

Then I met up with my friend Angie at the gym for some weight lifting and the elliptical. It was nice to catch up with her and chat while working out. So different to be working out without music blaring in my ears too.

I was so hungry by the time I got home at 7! I quickly chopped up some stuff and added to quinoa that was already cooked. It was basically the same quinoa combo I made the other day.

And now I just lost to my husband in Wordfeud. It’s so addictive to play and I keep saying it’s my “Alzheimer’s prevention” because I don’t play enough word games. I am surprised my hubby likes it because he doesn’t like Scrabble. It’s fun to compete against him, even if I just lost to him big time. Oh well–there’s a new game starting now and I better get my thinking cap on.

Night!

The Food Revolution has begun!

Wow, Twitter was crazy tonight during and after Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. I am glad he is getting people to support his cause. Too bad he can’t get the LAUSD to do that so far. Go Jamie! We have you’re back!

It was so sad to see all of that food the kids brought in from their schools. We can do better than nasty food in plastic packaging and sugar loaded flavored milk. Come on America, wake up! What a sad society we are becoming with our food choices and laziness. Maybe we’ll really become the future human society featured in Wall-e someday.

I tweeted that his beef info made me want to become vegetarian. He tweeted in general to everyone that his point wasn’t to do that, but to have people become more educated on the meat they are buying. I agree, but since I was a kid, I really never liked meat and thinking about where it came from. I still am considering becoming a vegetarian since my diet is about 90% vegetarian anyway.

My food choices for the day were:

It was a busy morning at work, so I woke myself up with a nice walk outside to Starbucks. My tall coffee was free because I handed in a Starbucks coffee bean bag.

I also munched on a whole peanut butter cookie larabar. I always tell myself I will only have half, but then once I start eating, I can’t stop!

I wore my pedometer at work today and by lunch time, I had about 6,000 steps in!

Then it was time to sit, have lunch of leftover tofu & asparagus. I coated the plain tofu in the lemony garlic olive oil mixture from the asparagus and it was divine.

Lunch was actually spent away from my desk instead of reading blogs and a book. I got to attend a lecture at my work and I geeked out with the famous person who was speaking. If I would reveal who it was, my workplace would also be revealed. Let’s just say it was one of the best lectures I have ever attended at my work.

I had to stay somewhat later at work, so after I got home from work, I meditated and then Craig was home. We went for a walk/run right away around the neighborhood.

Today was a training day for me to run for 20-25 minutes. I just ran for part of our walk, but we definitely walked for 20 plus minutes.

Dinner was a plain bagel with an egg white, cheddar cheese and Frank’s Red Hot sauce. I also had skim milk and some red grapes on the side.

It’s late and I want to read before bed, so I am off to read some blogs and a book.

Last family Christmas celebration

I was off of work today and wanted to go to Target, Kohl’s, etc. to see what Christmas stuff was leftover in the stores. Unfortunately, I woke up sick with what I think was the flu. I slept most of the day away and struggled with a horrible headache that usually comes on when I don’t have coffee. I am starting to feel better now, but not 100% because I didn’t eat much all day. It just sucks that I caught something over the weekend and then it hit on my one totally free day where we didn’t have to go to someone’s house to celebrate the holidays.

We had the last of our Christmas celebrations with my family yesterday. Per usual, my parents’ house was full of people and this didn’t even include three of my siblings in the mix (I am the youngest of seven kids).

Food I ate before going to my parents’:

Breakfast was a blueberry Chobani yogurt, a piece of a Danish kringle, and coffee.

I went to the gym in the late morning and did 35 minutes on the elliptical, 15 on the bike and lifted a few weights.

Shredded cheese in a whole wheat tortilla and a clementine for lunch. I originally put pinto beans in this, but I think they were bad because they tasted awful. Maybe this is where I got sick from, but that was such a tiny bite.

At my parents’ house, Craig and I opened our gift from my parents right away. I opened one bag that had Bath and Body Works soap, an Axe shower gel for Craig, Penzey’s baking spices and a holiday towel with “P” on it for our last name.

I thought that was a great gift and then my mom plopped a very heavy and large package on my lap. I figured out what it was before I unwrapped it and was elated!

We got a Kitchen Aid Classic Plus mixer! Now that I bake more, I really needed one of these and my mom felt sorry for my recent experience of using a very old hand mixer in a non-mixing bowl and how my cookie dough flew all over and didn’t mix well (when I made the peanut butter dough balls). My mom ended up getting an excellent deal on it at Kohl’s and couldn’t pass up the chance to get this excellent present for us for Christmas.

Craig and I joked that I’d be using the present and he’d be eating the product of it since he doesn’t bake.

And we got them a gift card to the movie theater. With the senior citizen discount, that should last them most of the year!

As Craig said, I did my “Nancy Drew” thing and took photos of and looked at ancestral documents/photos. Since I am getting so into genealogy lately, I need to keep getting as much info compiled so I can add to what I have.

We used to play Trivial Pursuit every Christmas and then that sort of faded away. That tradition was brought back yesterday. For once, I didn’t play. :(

Phew and Christmas is all over!

Happy first day of winter!

For this first day of winter, we appropriately got hit with icy, snowy roads to drive on. I had to haul a 50 lb. bag of salt into trunk of my car to weigh it down before heading to work.

On the radio this morning, one of my favorite morning shows was talking to former Olympic sprinter and gold medalist Carl Lewis, who now runs a website called “Fit Forever.” http://fitforever.com/ I haven’t been able to check it out in detail yet, but I like his mission of “helping people around the world energize their lives.”

It will be a pictureless (I originally wrote wordless, oops, I was so tired when I finished this post) Tuesday because I fell asleep on the couch tonight. I have been so tired the last two nights. Usually that means I am fighting an illness, but maybe it is the winter blues.

Breakfast today was Kashi Go Crisp! cereal, which I still just find kind of bland.

At work, I snacked on some dark chocolate Hershey’s kisses given to me by a co-worker and some raw almonds.

Lunch was Amy’s vegetable pot pie, a blueberry Chobani yogurt and a clementine.

And for dinner, we went to Qdoba and I ate more than half of a vegetarian burrito. The rest is for lunch tomorrow!

Time for bed, even though I fell asleep on the couch for a good portion of the night! Hopefully I will be able to sleep!

Lisa Pizza

I am turning into a pizza, hence my title of Lisa Pizza, which is also what my brother used to call me (besides mona Lisa). I have had pizza the last three days. Is that weird? At least I have had small quantities. Blame it on the free food, which occurred on Saturday night and tonight.

I also am slightly addicted to plain greek Oikos yogurt with sliced almonds and honey. No variety in my diet lately!

Breakfast today was Banana Nut Cheerios and coffee.

Snack was almond poppyseed bread and stollen with another coffee. I think winter is causing me to crave carbs.

Lunch was what else, leftover pizza from yesterday. The rest had a very orange theme and I didn’t realize it until I laid out my lunch for my photo: baby carrots, peach Chobani yogurt and clementines.

I couldn’t resist having this adorable snowman cookie for an afternoon snack. I went to a meeting at work and they had different holiday cookies out, so I grabbed Mr. Snowman.

I knew I would need a little snack before boot camp class later in the day.

My friend Angie and I tried a new Boot Camp class tonight. We met through Boot Camp class with the recreation department. I think we took about 4 consecutive boot camps together until we called it quits with the rec dept. classes last Monday. Since I belong to the YMCA and she will soon, we tried out the Bodyblast Boot Camp this evening. It was a great class and very similar to what we did in our other boot camp, except that we ran for 10 minutes straight, which I liked a lot. I missed running. I haven’t done it much since I sprained my right ankle this fall. The teacher was nice and also a former Blugold (my alma mater is the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and they have this weird, fake mascot, the Blugold). I’ll definitely go back to the Y boot camp. Too bad the nice teacher is leaving though and there will be a new one. I am sure he’ll be fine.

Dinner was dare I say it, pizza. My husband got it free from work. Seriously, this is why I blog because I notice these strange eating habits of mine. When I was a kid, I did this with yogurt and other foods. My parents would always say, “aren’t you sick of that?!” but I would tell them when I got sick of a certain food.

I am not feeling so great tonight. I hope I am not coming down with a cold before the holidays. I keep getting the chills, have a headache and was coughing most of the day. Time to lay down on the couch under a blanket and rest.

Movie day

I go to movies in the theater about 3 times a year. I have to really want to see a movie in order to pay about $10 to see it in the theater. Otherwise, I checkout DVDs from the library. This year, I have seen Avatar, Inception and Eat Pray Love in the the theater. I have seen some movies on the big screen for free. For some reason, all I can remember seeing for free is The Social Network.

Today is a treat because I am meeting two of my friends to see Black Swan this afternoon. I heard it was good and I expect it to be “dark” as I have read in some of the reviews.

I got to sleep in a little this morning. Surprisingly, the cats were not whining at the baby gates for us to feed them. Neither seemed to have an appetite after I removed the gates either. This worries me a little bit because I keep thinking that once Karma loses his appetite, the rest is downhill for his health. I hope this isn’t the case.

I was hungry this morning and had coffee, Kashi’s Go Lean Crisp! Toasted Berry Crumble and a clementine. The cereal was just ok. I received a little sample in the mail through Vocalpoint and some nice coupons, so I bought a big box at the store yesterday before I even tried it.

One of my favorite TV shows, CBS Sunday Morning, had my favorite actor on it today: Matt Damon! I have loved Matt Damon since Good Will Hunting. He’s so down to earth (and not bad to look at either).

It’s almost noon, so time to shower and figure out what to eat for lunch.
My tummy is grumbling again.

I haven’t decided if my sore body means I should take a rest day from the gym or not. I kind of want to go swimming, but we’ll see how I feel after the movie.

I met Angie at the Y for Body Pump at 9:15. It was a challenging class. I can tell by the soreness in my right thigh I am experiencing today!
