Yogurt fail

How was your Monday? Mine was good, especially because I didn’t end up hitting a huge row of backed up cars on the freeway on my way to work this morning. Thankfully, I was following far enough behind to begin with, but I still had to break really hard and turned to the right so I wouldn’t run into the cars if my breaks didn’t do their job properly. Whoa, it was a scary start to my day!

I had a yummy bowl of hot oats (Trader Joe’s maple instant oatmeal) with chia seeds and sunflower seed butter. I love the sunflower seed butter in hot oats–delish!

Lunch was a bit of a bummer.

I had leftover spoon hamburger on a bun with provolone cheese, a bit of leftover taco salad, some pb cookies and my other source of protein–chobani raspberry yogurt, was gross. I didn’t end up eating the vita top yet and will have it as a snack or for dessert tomorrow.

The Chobani yogurt was super sour and the first thing I noticed when I opened the package was that the consistency/texture was off than the normal texture in Chobani yogurt. I think I just got a bad batch of it. There wasn’t any mold in the container, so it’s a mystery to me as to why it was way off in flavor.

It was so disgusting tasting that I could not eat it and I e-mailed and twitter messaged Chobani right away. When paying over $1.00 each for yogurt, I figure I better give feedback and see what can be done about it. I knew I had more of this flavor that I purchased at Woodman’s in my fridge, so those will probably have to be thrown out too. :(

Craig made us dinner using some ingredients from the garden–cherry tomatoes & hot peppers and he heated up some rice. It was a burrito bowl of sorts without the beans or meat. I added some pepper jack cheese, Northwoods Penzey’s seasoning, and Frank’s Red Hot sauce to my bowl.

My tummy is still full from this simple but tasty meal, so I need just a bit more resting on the couch and then it’s time to hit the gym for some cardio. My body is pretty sore all over from lifting weights yesterday, so I decided I would do strictly cardio and maybe some abs tonight.

I am definitely a city girl!

We’re back from our trip up north! It was nice to relax, unplug a bit, nap, sleep in, and read without distractions. I did miss home and our cats especially, so it feels good to be back!

While I enjoy getting away from the city, I am definitely not a country girl. I guess I take after my mom! I told Craig that we’ll probably never go camping together. I feel bad, but in all seriousness, if I can’t handle spiders in the cottage bathroom, how could I ever camp?

We went out to eat on Friday night and had fry bread and cheese for our appetizer.

For fear of strange looks, I didn’t take a picture of my main meal. I got a delicious veggie burger with swiss cheese and mushrooms on it.

I was sent an Erin Baker sample pack of products before we left, so I tried Erin Baker’s Organic Brownie Bite. It was unexpectedly a bit minty and tasted so good!

We brought two bags of the Food Should Taste Good chips up north and tried those. Let’s just say my husband loved the White Cheddar and that bag is already gone. Glad I got to try more than a couple of handfuls of that flavor!

I munched on some jalapeno chips during our car ride home. Not that we needed any more “heat” added to our drive. You’ll hear more about that in a bit.

We went out to eat and walked around town on Friday night. We enjoy one particular restaurant in town, so we always return back there.

We played Uno a couple of times. Craig was declared the winner far more often than I was :(.

I finished reading The Hunger Games! It was so addictive to read. Craig also was reading it on his kindle and he claimed I was being competitive, trying to finish before him. The truth is, it was just so good that I had to get to the ending! I can’t wait to read the other two books!

Workouts:

I actually did not workout a lot and I missed it. I did a walk/run with Craig one morning before the humidity set in.

And I did yoga this morning using the Hot Body Yoga app from Women’s Health. It was my first time using the app and I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to try it more often.

It felt amazing to do some yoga! My body needed it.

Today’s car ride felt like our own version of 127 Hours. We weren’t stuck in the desert and we didn’t have to cut our arms off, but we were in extreme heat the whole way home and Craig’s air conditioning was not working.

Did I mention that I hate bugs of any kind, especially spiders? There was a black spider crawling around our pillows and food in the back seat. When I got the opportunity to, I killed the bugger. I know, it’s not very nice, but hunching forward in my car seat to avoid him wasn’t so pleasant either.

Besides the bugs and extreme temps, we faced a nice highway backup. Why oh why Dept. of Transportation of WI, would you have a popular two lane highway going from north to south cut down to one lane on a weekend when no one was doing any construction work? I am sure they have their reasons, but we and the other 100 something cars in the backup were not happy!

I actually feel sick when I am in that kind of heat with the sun blaring down on me. I was so happy to get home to our air conditioning blasting and the happy faces of our kitties.

Time to go change the laundry, unpack some more, and find something to eat.

Busy, but productive Saturday

As my title says, it was a very busy day by choice, but felt so nice and productive. At about 6:20, when we were sitting down and having dinner together, I said to Craig, “wow, this day went by so slowly, but in a good way because I got so much done.” Love those kind of days!

I woke up, meditated and then had a craving for oatmeal, so that’s what I made.

I wanted to go to yoga, but by the time I ate, it was getting late and I was SO full from the oatmeal. I decided to stay home instead and clean. I was in one of my cleaning moods, so I threw laundry in, dusted, washed dishes, cleaned counters and the kitchen table, vacuumed, swept and got the kitchen ready for mopping. I managed to read my book in between cleaning too.

I wasn’t too hungry for a “real” lunch, so I had a pomegranate chobani and a triple chocolate chunk vita top.

Then I was off to Craig’s grandma’s 90th birthday party. I went late, after the meal was over, because I really didn’t want to pay $15 to have the meal choice they offered and there was no vegetarian option. They had fried chicken, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, etc. I wouldn’t have enjoyed the meat and it probably would have upset my stomach. I just had a few bites of birthday cake.

After the party, I headed to Pick N’ Save to get some groceries on double double coupon day. I could double 10 coupons, which was great because we needed oatmeal, cereal, clementines, olive oil, etc. and I was able to save a lot of money today.

Then it was time to mop the floors! I really hate this chore more than any other in the house. It takes so much time to clear everything out and we just have a small kitchen and bathroom!

Seeing shiny, clean floors made me happy though.

I felt like the energizer bunny today. The next thing I did was lace up my running shoes and get outside for a 15 minute run.

It felt so good to run outside opposed to the treadmill. I just wish I had a garmin to see what my pace was and the distance I completed. I know they aren’t that much money, but I am not sure it is worth the investment for me. Especially because I couldn’t use it at the gym in the winter.

Clearly this is a (shiny) face of a very happy blogger who can get outside and run, at last!

Because I didn’t go to the gym, I decided to lift my 8 lb. weights too.

Dinner was delicious. Every time I make a quinoa dish like this, I just go “mmmmm” throughout dinner. I made mine with kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, tomato basil feta cheese, dried basil and mural of flavor from Penzey’s spices, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

When I saw this flavor at the store today, I knew I had to try it in the quinoa dish.

And after dinner, Craig and I went on a long walk around the neighborhood. It was nice to see flowers coming up and some even had bloomed already! They’re really going to go into action tomorrow when it’s in the 70’s.

Right before I started blogging this post, I ate a skinny cow cookies n’ cream ice cream sandwich.

Just a typical Monday

How was your Monday? Mine was much better than last Monday since I got enough zzzz’s. I had tons of meetings to go to today, so I had to be on top of my game.

Breakfast was oats in a jar. I sprinkled in some cinnamon (two types of Penzey’s) and added 3/4 of a banana. I also topped my oats with some chocolate chips.

No snack at work today–didn’t need one after that bowl of oats kept me nice and full! I just had a cup of instant coffee for an extra pick me up on a Monday morning.

Lunch was leftover pizza (two slices), strawberry Athenos greek yogurt, and an unpictured pink lady apple.

For dessert, I had havla, which my co-worker brought back from Israel. It was pretty good. Totally love trying new foods from other countries!

Dinner was the leftover pasta with tomato sauce and almond cake for dessert. I washed it all down with some skim milk.

My workout tonight was good. The gym was quite packed, so I started with weights, then went on the Octane elliptical, and walked on the treadmill at a high incline. I checked March’s top fitlinxx members of the month board and was shocked to see the number of points the women got last month (my name didn’t show up on the list this time)! Some tough competition out there, but it motivates me to push myself so I can get back on that board another month!

Time to catch up on my blog and book reading!

I have been spending more time with the treadmill at the gym this week. I have purposely been running more to test out how I do with it. I think I’ve been doing pretty good, at least starting out with these low miles again. My knee sort of bugs me and I get side aches a lot, but I am sure that with proper training and everything, I can do a 10k in a couple of months.

I was in the mood for oatmeal this morning, so breakfast was stovetop oats with peanut butter. I added some cinnamon to spice things up but without a ripe banana, these oats were just ok.

Snack at work was peppermint tea and half of a Kind bar. I am on quite the peppermint tea kick lately. It has no caffeine of course, but the peppermint perks me up during a mid-morning break from work. While snacking, I read the article I posted earlier today about Wisconsin food and knew I would have to share it with you readers.

Lunch was an Amy’s vegetable pot pie and two oreo cookies for dessert.

Dinner was three pierogis and brussell sprouts loaded with Penzey’s spices. Thanks to Anne’s post today, I learned a lot about brussell sprouts and craved them for dinner.

Dessert was some really yummy almond cake made by my mom with some skim milk.

Workout: I let my stomach rest and then got to the gym. I biked while reading Health magazine for 20 minutes; ran and walked on the treadmill for 15 minutes and lifted some weights. I also did some abs and major stretching of my legs.

Time to read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and get ready for bed. My favorite quotes thus far are:

I’m enjoying the book so far and am looking forward to discussing it at the New Berlin library’s food program in two weeks from tonight.

Go Packers!

The game is on and I actually didn’t go to the gym during it. I’ll watch most, if not all of it and then head to the gym. Go Packers!

I started my day with a bowl of oats topped with fresh blueberries and chia seeds. I used my China Starbucks cup because I needed a huge cup of coffee. The cats woke us up at 6:15 and I couldn’t sleep anyway, so I got up. I figured it was better that way for waking up at 5:40 tomorrow.

Later in the morning, I snacked on Jessica’s granola and had another cup of coffee.

I headed out of the house to run some errands to Sears, Penzey’s Spices and Sendik’s grocery store.

At Sears, I got the Golla Lynne camera bag I wanted before our trip to Florida!

Before leaving the house, I used the Sears 2 go shopping site on my iPod touch & loaded the page showing the Sears associated CSN linked site for the Golla Lynne camera bag. They had a sale on the bag for $41.99 and Sears itself did not. I asked for the price match and got it. Sweet! The bag was “free” anyway because I got a Sears gift card from my credit card points.

Here is a somewhat fuzzy picture of the interior color and style. It is roomy enough to hold a DSLR camera and a lens (someday we’ll buy the big lens, I hope).

I like how the bag sits on my hip and doesn’t feel heavy. I think I will end up using it as a camera bag and purse on our trip. The front pocket has more than enough room for my purse items, as long as I stay minimalistic.

At Penzey’s Spices, I got this nice 1 oz. jar of minced garlic for free. Thanks to their catalog coupons, I have built up a nice collection of spices and most of them were free.

If you don’t already get their catalog in the mail, I would encourage anyone to sign up for it to get the free spices and excellent recipes inside. You don’t have to purchase anything to get the free spices either, so that’s an added bonus. The quality of their spices is excellent.

At Sendik’s grocery store, I found this very green and gold display, so I couldn’t resist taking a picture.

Once home, I used some of the spinach I just bought to make a green monster smoothie. I put Silk almond milk, Whole Foods soy protein powder, a half of a frozen banana, some frozen pineapple and ice cubes in it.

I didn’t realize it until I was taking these pictures–maybe the green smoothie with yellow pineapple will be good luck for the Packers!

His and hers smoothies. I always have the large size. My husband doesn’t eat spinach in salads or on sandwiches, but I can get him to drink it in this smoothie. I have found through all of my green monster experimentation–I prefer the flavor of plain almond milk in the smoothie vs. skim cow’s milk.

I don’t think I have ever posted a green monster smoothie on here before. I always make them in the summer, but it’s hard to drink cold smoothies during the winter.

And I realize this post is getting very long, so I will end it with a picture of the pizza I ate while watching the beginning of the Packers vs. Bears game.

Later on, I’ll go to the gym for some elliptical, biking and weights.

The Pack is in the lead at 14-0 right now, so let’s hope we win the game! If you read my blog, you know I am not a huge football fan and neither is my husband. But, for the sake of my home state’s very dedicated football fans, I hope we win.

Goodbye Garfield

On my way home from work tonight, I called my dad and he told me to call him back when I got home. I said, “did something bad happen?” and he said, “just call me when you get home.” I replied back, “is it Garfield, did he die?” And my dad said yes. I knew his time was coming soon, as with my other bird, I took one look at Garfield at Thanksgiving and knew he was at the end of his life.

Garfield is the last of my childhood birds that was left. He lived with my parents, but I truly enjoyed visiting with him when I went to their house. He died this afternoon and will be missed. I grew up with cockatiel birds, 5 of them in fact over time. I had Garfield since I was 9 or 10. He was originally called Felix and I loved Garfield the cat, so I named him another cat cartoon name. Rest in peace little birdie, I’ll miss your chirping, tough guy bites, enthusiasm for fresh bread, love of baths in the bathroom sink, pretty pretty bird songs and you looking at yourself in the mirror or lamp base.

Quick post

I had to work today and my weekend will be cut short, since I don’t have off on Monday. Therefore, this post will also be short because I am limited on my time! After a nap, I buzzed around the house doing dishes, laundry and picking up in general. Unfortunately, I have been a slacker in the fitness department this week. I really miss the gym, but when my body hurts from running around all day at work, I can’t justify going to the gym for a workout. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and rest.

Breakfast today was the rest of the stovetop oats I made for breakfast yesterday–I put a half of a banana in it, NuttZo and chocolate chips. Next time, I will skip the banana because the chocolate and nut flavor would have been perfect.

Like I said before, I had the opportunity to work with some local genealogists and had help researching my family tree. I have a lot of information on my dad’s side, but had names and dates for my mom’s and didn’t know a lot about it. I got a few more pieces of information filled in today, so that was cool. Last night, I stayed up late and finally figured out that a misspelling in a town name on my dad’s side had stopped me from finding the area in Germany they were from. Finally, I read through some history and found the district of Neubrandenburg, Germany and the correct spelling and city where my ancestors originated from. I love history and majored in it in college, so it makes sense that I love discovering all of this information about my family.

We are supposed to get hammered by a big snow storm tonight and I hope that doesn’t change my plans for brunch with the girls and Whole Foods after tomorrow.

That’s all folks–it’s getting late here and I’ll write a longer post tomorrow.

Aaah, strong coffee

I love strong (expensive) coffee with a full body and great taste. My boss didn’t like this coffee, it was too “earthy” for him, so he gave it to me to try out. I loved it! I always pay a little more for coffee and find it is worth it. This coffee is local to Milwaukee, so I also like buying local products when I can. I don’t buy Alterra too often, but maybe I will more now that I was so impressed with my yummy cup this morning.
