Coffee buzz

Hooray, it’s almost Friday!

My Thursday was quite caffeinated. I drank a cup of coffee for breakfast, brought a thermos and I scored a free almond cafe au lait at work. Needless to say, I was feeling like I had ADD and I got a ton of stuff done at work. I felt happy, talkative and productive.

Then it made me sick. Too much coffee is never good for my IBD.

I stayed at work late and was hungry when I got home, so I just warmed up one of these. I had tried this brand before and liked it. It was a yummy meal!

I topped it with Frank’s red hot, which I think I will always be obsessed with.

I snickered when I saw Craig’s “girlfriend.” My husband and I saw this girl on the other night and he thought she was cute, lisp and all. :) So, I teased him by sending him an e-mail with a photo of his girlfriend.

After facetiming a couple of people, including my parents, I hit the gym. Facetime is so much fun, so if you have an iPhone or iPad and haven’t tried it yet, do it!

I changed things up tonight by only wearing my hair halfway up for my workout. With my shorter hair, it’s much easier to do. Usually I only wear a ponytail with my bangs clipped back or a headband holding my hair in place.

I had a really good workout. The gym was sort of empty so I decided to partake in a bunch of moves I learned at boot camp a couple of years ago. I used the BOSU and got some weird stares (or maybe I am just paranoid). I really have grown to love the BOSU for doing pushups on, abs, balance exercises, lunges, burpees, etc. I got my heart rate up and was sweating pretty quickly! I also rowed and lifted weights. I stayed away from doing too much cardio at the gym because I knew I’d head outside once I got home.

It was gorgeous out again so I ran and walked around my neighborhood. I took my phone with me and listened to Foster the People, Florence and the Machine, Dream on by Aerosmith (loving this old song lately) and Terrified by Among Savages, one of my new favorites.

Because I felt dehydrated from my coffee overload day, I chugged a Vita Coco. I won a bunch from Laura and they arrived the other day! I love coconut water! I know my husband thinks it’s gross.

And now I am watching the documentary Food Fight so I better go pay attention to what Alice Waters, Will Allen (of Growing Power in Milwaukee, woo hoo) Marion Nestle and Michael Pollan have to say. It’s really interesting so far and making me wish I had more money when I lived in Berkeley, CA so I could have had a nice meal at Chez Panisse. Next time we go back there, we’ll definitely have to go!

Oh and I think Earl Butz alone is responsible for messing up our food system in America. Thanks Earl! Look at the mess you have created and now we are having trouble getting out of it.

Heavenly Apple Juice

Craig and I finally tried the juicer out last night and we went through a whole bag of green apples.

We both had medium sized glasses to drink and were so full! In fact, we could not eat much of our actual dinner because of it.

The weird experience we both had was a buzz in our heads. I had a bunch of energy for a while and then it went downhill.

It was our first experience juicing and despite the messy process, we loved it. The juice was amazing and Craig loves juice, so I am happy if he drinks something more pure once in a while. I can’t wait to try out new recipes with carrots, beets, cucumbers, kale and spinach (not all in one juice, but combined in various ways of course).

I had a case of the Mondays, so after work, I had a big salad for dinner, ate some of this glorious chocolate and looked through the February issue of Glamour that came in the mail today. Aaah, that helped ease my Monday blues.

A short nap and workout after that also helped. Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit got me up to about 18 mph on the bike and it felt great. I rowed and lifted weights too and then called it a night at the gym. My hips are killing me from running and walking on the treadmill yesterday, so I took it somewhat easy. I’ve never experienced hip pain like I had today and it’s not fun. Foam rolling and using a rolling pin kind of eased the pain. I just hope I wake up tomorrow and it’s not as bad.

Do you juice? If so, what’s your favorite combination? My favorite cafe bought juice had beets, lime juice, apple and strawberries. Yum!

Energetic Friday

It’s amazing what a good night of sleep can do for you! I probably got about 10 hours of sleep and my body didn’t hurt when I woke up for the first time all week. I felt achy and stressed all week with lots going on at work.

Anyway, I purposely got that much sleep because I have to stay up until midnight this evening for work.

I started my morning with Chobani strawberry yogurt topped with strawberries and blueberries.

While at Target last week, I picked up the Starbucks caramel flavored coffee. It is really good! I honestly have a love/hate relationship with flavored coffee and this flavor impressed me. It reminds me most of a caramel frappucino (without all of the calories associated with said drink). Caramel frappucinos used to be my go to drink at Starbucks, so anything that is similar to it without the fat and calories is ok by me.

After watching the morning shows for a bit including a story on how a proper night of sleep at 8 hours plus helped a bunch of women lose weight (how timely), I finally got ready for the gym.

I was in a really cheery and energetic mood this morning, so I went with my new yellow Danskin Active top and my sassy sweaty bands headband. I even dared to take the picture below without makeup on. 20 something year old me would have never done that, but now that I am nearly 31, I don’t care what people think of my makeup less face anymore.

At the gym, I was in an even better mood when I found that someone left behind an old issue of Whole Living magazine, which is becoming one of my favs. I read that while biking for 18 minutes, I lifted a full circuit of weights, did some free weights, abs and the elliptical for 16 minutes. I love great workouts like the one I had today.

I’m cooking up some tofu topped with Penzey’s mural of flavor spice (which is my favorite of Penzey’s spices), so I better run and check to make sure my tofu doesn’t burn. I want to bring a healthy dinner to work so I feel good for my event tonight. That should ensure I stay in a good mood as well. :)

Gardening class, massage, and work

Sometimes it’s just more difficult to post on the weekend, so here’s my recap of the last two days.

On Saturday morning, Craig and I went to a “Grow Your Own Groceries” workshop at the Zablocki library.

It was totally free and a really good class. I definitely feel like I’ll be more passionate and ready for gardening season to begin. We learned about pests, composting, when to start planting in our area, soil composition and other tips about gardening. We are going to container garden again this year because it worked well for us last year. Someday, it would be nice to have a raised bed.

We even picked out a bunch of seeds at the end of class!

Saturday’s breakfast was a mini bagel with egg whites, provolone, and Frank’s Red Hot. I also had some Chobani plain yogurt with blueberry preserves.

On the way back from our class, I snacked on a Larabar because it was nearing 12:30 and I was hungry!

Lunch was a ham, cheddar, spinach, tomato, and oregano panini and strawberries.

After lunch, I went to the Aveda Institute of Beauty and Wellness for an hour long massage. They just moved to a new location and it was really hip, yet relaxing inside.

Unfortunately, they were running late and I didn’t get into my appointment until about an hour after it was scheduled for. The masseuse I had made up for it because she did a fantastic job. I asked for deeper pressure and I got it. The interesting thing was when she told me I had crystals in my feet. That could mean many things, but it could have to do with reflexology. I guess I should rub my feet more and get the crystals out. She also said she could tell I work out a lot. My body wasn’t really that tight in areas though.

We had dinner late and I was in the mood for pasta, so I made some rotini that has servings of vegetables contained in it. This was for my husband’s sake more than my own.

I made some Nature’s Pride toast, cut it in half, and covered it with earth balance and garlic powder.

We watched part of the movie “The Town” last night and finished the other half tonight. It was better than we both expected.

This morning’s breakfast was plain old Cheerios with some coffee. It’s going to be hard, but I may stop using half and half in my coffee when it runs out. I think it will be better for me, but I also just have to get used to the taste of black coffee.

I also had a bite of a cashew cookie Larabar before going to the YMCA.

I had a really good workout. I stayed for an hour and a half and felt like I could have done more, had I had the time.

I biked for 15 minutes while reading Health; lifted weights and can tell I am getting stronger because my old settings seem too light; ran on the treadmill and felt really good doing that; rowed for 6 minutes and then stretched.

After stretching, I looked outside and thought it was snowing. Then I saw the huge chunks falling from the sky and realized it was hail. We got a really bad hail storm today. It was not fun to drive home on and felt like a fresh coat of snow and ice.

I was hungry when I got home! I had an egg white with cheddar on a mini bagel and made an awesome chocolate banana protein smoothie.

I was still hungry before going to work this afternoon, so I had a raspberry chobani yogurt. It was my first time trying raspberry and it didn’t disappoint!

I worked an event for almost three hours and then got of there because I was itching to be home.

We made pizza for dinner–boboli with mozzarella, pepperoni, and I added spinach and broccoli to my half.

Only two pieces for me so I can save the rest for my work lunch tomorrow!

Well, it’s getting late and I need to clean the house a bit before going to bed early. If I learned anything from last Sunday night, it’s that I need to get to bed earlier on a Sunday so I don’t feel tired and cranky on a Monday.

Trying Kale Chips, at last!

Even though I had to work today, I had a great Monday. I was really tired when I first got up, but perked up with an afternoon coffee.

Breakfast was two Eggo whole wheat waffles with skippy crunchy natural peanut butter, syrup and earth balance spread.

No mid-morning snack for me because I was in a meeting that went longer than I expected it to. :(

Lunch was a ham sandwich with spinach, tomatoes and Frank’s Red Hot on whole wheat; applesauce; and red grapes.

I snacked on half of an apple pie larabar an hour before I left work, so my tummy wouldn’t be so hungry at the gym. I had the other half at home, right before going to the YMCA.

After work, I picked up these two books from the library.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle & Crazy Sexy Diet

I had started Animal, Vegetable, Miracle years ago, but never got into it, because at the time, I was not as interested in food and nutrition as I am now. I am reading it to prepare for a April 13th book discussion at the New Berlin Public Library. All of you local foodies–Karis and I are going to attend if you want to join us. She put it out there on her blog too.

I am also excited to read crazy sexy diet. I have heard good things about both books–if only there was more time to read! I’ll have to make time during my lunch breaks and before bed.

At the gym, I did a warmup of 10 minutes of biking at a quick pace. I then lifted a few weights and went on the Cybex Arc Trainer because it was the only cardio machine available. I wanted to run on the treadmill, but they were all full.

Recovery included a blueberry, frozen banana, milk, ice cubes and soy protein powder smoothie. I needed some protein to fill my tummy temporarily while I cooked dinner.

Dinner was delicious! I finally made kale chips and used Kath Eats Real Food’s recipe. I also had some herbed tofu.

The kale chips were really good. I had Craig try one and he was grossed out. Oh well. I topped them with various Penzey’s spices, sea salt and olive oil. I definitely learned my lesson because I should have made more, but I figured I was trying it out for the first time anyway, so I didn’t want to make too many in case they didn’t turn out well.

Fun fact for those of you watching Dancing With the Stars tonight (we don’t watch it). On our honeymoon in Europe, we happened to walk past (and later “stalk” to get pictures of) the model and now Dancing contestant Petra Nemcova on the Charles Bridge in Prague. It’s embarrassing, but I am the one who recognized her and not my husband. I remembered her as a supermodel and from about five years ago, when she was on Oprah talking about losing her fiance in the tsunami.

It looked like she was filming an ad on the bridge because she had a big group of people with her and they had video cameras and other equipment.

California dreaming

Happy Tuesday! Can’t believe tomorrow is already hump day. This week is going to fly by! I’m looking forward to warmer temps in my neck of the woods and to some fun this weekend with friends.

Breakfast was an old favorite, Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves paired with Chobani non-fat greek plain yogurt. I used to eat Bonne Maman with yogurt sometimes three times a day when I lived in California and all of my tummy troubles started. Yogurt was what my body craved and I couldn’t get enough of this combination. Bonne Maman was cheaper at Woodman’s than any other grocery store I have seen it at, so I really should have picked up more than one jar!

Snack at work was some of my homemade granola bar and a Numi jasmine green tea. I must have been “California dreaming” today because this flavor of tea also brought me back to my days living in California. I was obsessed with Peet’s coffee and tea’s Jasmine Tea. I also loved running by jasmine bushes on my runs around Berkeley.

I enjoyed a ham and provolone sandwich on a french baguette with tomatoes, Frank’s Red Hot and spinach for lunch. Basically what I had for dinner yesterday. I also had a Pomegranate Chobani for the first time ever and it didn’t disappoint! Can’t wait to try Mango and Raspberry and then I think I will have tried every Chobani flavor out there. :) Red grapes were my dessert.

Although that lunch filled me up quite well, I had a craving for something sweet around 3 p.m. so I grabbed a mini chocolate chip cookie dough Larabar from my snack drawer.

Speaking of Larabars, my mom picked up some things for Craig and I at Sam’s Club today (we don’t have a membership) and I asked her to just see if they had Larabars there. They did! I got a combo pack of Apple Pie, Cashew Cookie, and Cherry Pie! 18 bars for $15.88 or something like that–a pretty good deal, huh? I told my mom to grab a flavor to try out for herself, especially since she’d never had a Larabar before, and she enjoyed the cherry pie bar tonight. She said it was different than she expected it to be, but it was good.

I got home from work, meditated, rested a bit and then made dinner.

I had a Morningstar black bean veggie burger with provolone cheese on an Arnold’s thin and some applesauce on the side. Oh and a small glass of skim milk!

After my stomach settled, I hit the gym and worked hard. I rowed, biked and did the Cybex Arc trainer. I like mixing my cardio up like this once in a while. I also did a full circuit of weights. I was stinky when I left there!

Now it’s getting late and there are dishes to do and blogs to catch up on.

Night!

Movie day

Today was movie day, in honor of the Oscars of course! We finally got to the theater to see The King’s Speech. I really enjoyed it and so did Craig. I also find Colin Firth to be extremely attractive. I explained to Craig the whole Mr. Darcy Pride and Prejudice thing, but he doesn’t get it that I would like “an old man.” There is something about Colin though–I think his eyes exude kindness and vulnerability. I hope he wins Best Actor tonight! His acting was superb in the movie and I enjoyed learning more about the Royal family.

Breakfast today was french toast! I am not sure if I have ever made it before. I used a recipe off of my half and half bottle from Target. Craig hadn’t had it with vanilla extract and cinnamon before and said it tasted different. I loved it with those ingredients because I don’t think my mom made it with those when I was growing up. It tasted like it was made in a restaurant.

I completely forgot that I wanted to add some Nutella to it until my last two bites, so I added some and it was pure bliss.

I ate a quick burrito with refried beans, cheddar cheese and Frank’s Red Hot before we went to the movie.

For some reason, the movie made Craig and I tired so we napped when we got back. I slept way too long and then got up to go to the gym.

I did 10 minutes on the rowing machine, 16 on the bike while reading about Happiness in Real Simple magazine and lifted weights on a few machines and some free weights.

Dinner was a mango pineapple smoothie with protein powder.

Ok, time to switch the laundry, look around on the internet a bit and then it’ll be bedtime before I know it!

Brainwashed by Subway

Craig and I seem to be addicted to the TV show Undercover Boss. We always say we are not going to watch it, but I see the previews while I watch The Amazing Race and can’t help but leave Undercover Boss on. This past Sunday, they featured Subway and both Craig and I found ourselves craving a Subway sandwich. We fulfilled that craving tonight by having it for dinner. We had a buy one footlong, get one free coupon and then we always have another half for lunch the next day.

I got the “usual”–nine grain honey oat with ham and provolone, spinach, black olives, green peppers, tomatoes, pickles and a little bit of jalapenos.

After Subway, we went to the library. We are geeks, I know this and it’s ok. Craig and I love libraries.

I read Self magazine while Craig picked out a huge stack of DVDs to watch over the four day weekend.

I picked out two books–Conscious Kitchen by Alexandra Zissu and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.

I hope I don’t slack off over the weekend and find some time to read these. I have high hopes for that and for cooking & baking.

Rewind to my other meals of the day.

Lunch was an Arnold’s Thin with Muenster cheese, spinach, cucumbers, red peppers, & Frank’s Red hot sauce; a Strawberry Chobani and three Chocolate Chocolate Chip Newman’s Own Organic cookies for dessert. I know it’s not the healthiest, but I eat lunch at my desk every day during the winter. I like to read blogs, check my e-mail and read books. I am not much of a social person when it comes to lunch. To relax, I prefer my routine. In the summer, I take walks and eat outside.

Breakfast was Honey Nut Cheerios with skim milk and coffee with Pumpkin Spice creamer.

Tuesday is usually my rest day from the gym, but I went because the YMCA will be closed on Thanksgiving. I also went because I was not sore at all from Boot Camp yesterday. I just biked for 15 minutes to get my legs moving and did 8 of the weight machine circuit stations. It was super busy, so I had trouble getting on all of the machines. That’s ok though, I mostly wanted to cover my legs to strength train for my ankle injuries and I accomplished that goal.

Off to work on my “Why I love the Y” post! I started writing it at lunch today and hope I can finish it tonight.
