New vegetables

My meals have been kind of boring this week, so here are the more interesting aspects of my day.

I walked to the farmers market with a co-worker during lunch today. She was fun to go with because she knew what she wanted to buy, asked the farmers selling the produce if she could pay for one vegetable out of a bunch, and encouraged me to buy vegetables I had never tried before.

I picked up a bunch of cucumbers, pattypan squash, and half of a thai eggplant. The vegetable that was new to me was the pattypan squash (which surprised my co-worker and some other co-workers we ran into at the market).

The vegetable that was new to both my co-worker and I was the Thai eggplant. She split the eggplant in half and shared it with me to try. We ate a few raw pieces at work and it was good!

We stopped by the Great Harvest Bread stand and I tried some Dakota bread, which was yummy. We bought this delicious cream cheese, blueberry, and raspberry scone to share and split in half.

Doesn’t it look like moldy bread?

I scarfed it down when we got back to work! It was very moist and tasty compared to other scones I have had. Don’t know if another one will ever compare again! The addition of the cream cheese was fantastic too.

Before we left the market, I saw my mother-in-law eating lunch on a bench and ran up to her to chat. She works near the market and I have run into her there before, but it was nice to see her. Turns out my co-worker and mother-in-law both know the same person and they got to talking about that.

I left work somewhat earlier than normal so I could race home, meditate, and change to get to Zumba by 5 p.m. I hadn’t been to Zumba in a while and decided I need something to force me to do cardio for a full hour, so dancing (or attempting to) for a full hour was it. I didn’t know the moves for some of the songs, which always makes me feel stupid, but I tried to do the best I could. If I keep going to class every Wednesday, this won’t happen anymore!

Anyway, some of the new songs and dances were great! I absolutely love Indian dances and wish there was a whole Indian style dancing class!

I should get off of here and be productive by doing dishes or something.

Have a wonderful evening!

Zumba zumba

It’s only 12:30 and I feel like I have a productive day off so far. Unfortunately, I am feeling sick in my tummy and my energy seems to be dropping as a result.

Breakfast this morning was Stonyfield non-fat vanilla yogurt with strawberries and chia seeds.

After breakfast, I meditated and then got ready for the gym. I went to Zumba class, which was totally packed with energetic women! The class was fun, even though I always feel like I am not sure what I am doing. I just try to follow along and fake it. I haven’t done Zumba in about a month or more, so that didn’t help either. I plan to try to do it more often because I find it to be so fun and I end up super sweaty at the end.

When Zumba finished, I wanted to go to intermediate yoga for an hour, but I was beat from dancing and I didn’t feel so well at this point in the morning. I just lifted a bunch of weights, free and the machines.

On the way home from the Y, I had a Cashew Cookie flavored Larabar.

I sported the Speed Up tank from Lululemon today. I loved it! I found the style to be very comfortable and designed well. I liked the longer length especially.

Now I am going to guzzle a bunch of water and see if feeling more hydrated helps my tummy issues. Then if I am ok, I’ll go shopping. I figure I can always take a break to sit down and drink tea or something.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

More Zumba

Oh Friday, how I longed for you all week!

I started out my last day of the work week with a lot of Jessica’s chocolate chip granola. (I over-poured the milk on accident and had to compensate). I also had some cantaloupe because it has to be eaten up before it goes bad.

Lunch was a spinach salad with grape tomatoes, Athenos hummus, Athenos feta cheese, cucumber slices and green pepper. I also added a Musselman’s Granny Smith Applesauce and Dannon Activia Dessert yogurt in Vanilla Bean to my lunch bag.

My real dessert wasn’t that Dannon yogurt because it’s not very dessert like to me. Instead I tried the Raspberry Dark Chocolate attune bar out. I would say it is equally as tasty as the mint chocolate one.

When I got home from work, I quickly did a load of laundry, some dishes and cleaned in general. I was clearly in a cleaning mood! I like to get as much done as possible before the weekend so I can enjoy it.

I snacked on some Pomegranate Newman’s Own Organics licorice.

Dinner was a Boca cheeseburger with Swiss cheese on an Arnold’s Thin.

Zumba tonight with Angie was fun! I can’t believe I did Zumba two days in a row. I feel like an addict. There were a lot of new songs and moves again.

Tomorrow morning, I am getting my hair highlighted, which will eat up half of the day because it’s at a beauty school. It’s half the price of a regular salon and I need to read The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest anyway, so I don’t mind if it takes a little longer than normal.

Hope you’re having a great start to the weekend.:)

Zumbathon

It’s late and I just got home from a Zumbathon in downtown Milwaukee, which was sponsored by Lululemon. There were probably 100 plus women and men there tonight! Crazy!

My friends Kim (who is a Zumba instructor) and Jenny (middle) joined me (on the right).

Kim, Jenny, Lisa Zumbathon

We danced in the Astor Hotel ballroom for an hour and fifteen minutes. Jenny is new to Zumba too. Even though I probably have done it 7 or 8 times now, I had trouble keeping up because there were so many new songs they played. It was fun, put a smile on my face and great to workout with friends.

Before picking Jenny up for the Zumbathon, I headed to the Milwaukee Public Market for the second day in a row. This time I got dinner there at The Green Kitchen.

Rewind to lunch…I didn’t take a photo, but it was the rest of my Subway footlong from yesterday, a bunch of carrots and a Dannon Activia vanilla dessert yogurt. Later in the afternoon, I snacked on a pink lady apple and a mint chocolate attune bar.

Breakfast today was fresh blueberries & Jessica’s Gluten Free Granola in Almond Cherry. I think I liked the Vanilla Maple flavor better, but this was still really good.

That’s all folks. It’s time to relax a little and then get to bed. I can’t believe how quickly this week has gone by. I guess it’s because I have been working weird hours and been doing stuff after work a couple of days this week.

Granola goodness

Today was better than yesterday, but there were still some weird things going on at work. The moon is still full and will be for another day, so I guess I just have to suck it up and deal with issues like I have been.

Breakfast was boring–Kashi Autumn Wheat with coffee.

Kashi Autumn Wheat and coffee

Snack was a few dried apricots and another cup of coffee at work.

Lunch was leftovers of German Potato Salad, a slice of pizza, green peppers and a pink lady apple.

We had an all-staff meeting at work and they served mostly healthy foods :) (usually it’s cookies and some grapes), so I had a bunch of fruit salad and some pasta salad with veggies. The berries in the fruit salad hit the spot. I miss summer fruits. :(

When I got home from work, I was excited to find a package on my doorstep!!

It was the Jessica’s gluten free granola I won from clean eating chelsey!

Jessica even wrote a nice, handwritten note. Love getting packages with handwritten notes! Thanks Jessica.

She mentioned that the Milwaukee Whole Foods will have her products soon, so that is exciting for all of you local readers!

Karma sniffed around right after I set up for my photo.

Tanzi wanted in on the action too.

I raced to the gym to make the 5 p.m. Zumba class. It was ok. I really preferred the music and dance steps from the class I took last week with a different teacher. I struggled to keep up with some songs I hadn’t heard before.

Dinner was fettuccine alfredo again. I got home from the gym around 6:20, so I was super hungry and again, dinner had to be quick. I keep wanting to make a more elaborate quinoa dish for dinner this week and it’s just not happening.

fettuccine alfredo

Dessert was exciting (unlike my boring breakfast)–Jessica’s Vanilla Maple granola with some skim milk. It was so tasty that I went back for seconds. I can’t wait to try the other flavors too!

Craig is watching American Idol and I guess I am too because I just so happen to be blogging from our living room, per usual. I am most excited to see the Milwaukee auditions next week. They take place at my former workplace–the Milwaukee Art Museum. I was in the background while they were filming an interview outside of the Bradley Center, so maybe I will even be on TV, but I highly doubt it!

Shaking it

I shook my butt this morning in Zumba class. It was a morning class and I normally go in the evening with a different teacher, so I had to follow everyone’s moves and try to keep up. I did pretty good. It helped that we had a mirror to face in this class. It was kind of nice to see what a different teacher’s class was like.

Before Zumba, I hit the weight machines and after Zumba, I finished my weight circuit and biked for 15 minutes.

Breakfast this morning was exactly what I had yesterday:

Babysitting my nephews last night was fun. They have tons of energy. I calmed one of them down by reading a book to him and making him laugh with my funny voices and animations.

Here is Nathan with the picture he made for his daddy’s 40th birthday:

And the other nephew, Owen:

Before my brother and sister-in-law came home from the restaurant, we lit the candles on the cake and yelled surprise when they walked in. This was more for the sake of my nephews than my brother, as he knew we were going to do that!

Gotta go get ready for work! I am working 12-9 p.m. because of an event we have and will do the same thing all over again tomorrow. It is kind of nice to be off in the morning, but always feels so rushed.

Have a fabulous Wednesday readers! :)

My first oats in a jar

Anyone else ready for a mini Christmas vacation? I am ready for our vacation in Florida, but I have to wait another month and a half for that. Gee, we better get our flights, rental car and hotel booked soon! Anyone have any recommendations of where to eat and stay in the Orlando area?

My breakfast consisted of the blog world’s famous “oats in a jar.” I don’t know who started it, but they are a genius. I took a container of NuttZo that only had about an inch left of nut butter left and put stovetop oats into it. I also added some honey and greek yogurt to sweeten and add protein. No dishes to wash, just a container to recycle. This would be perfect to take to work, as long as you don’t mind a cooler bowl of oats. Obviously, I would highly recommend trying the oats in a jar idea.

Lunch was leftover Qdoba (veggies burrito), the last Oikos caramel yogurt, clementines and some chocolate–a Kinder Bueno to be specific. I am surrounded by chocolate at the office. Not just any chocolate, but German chocolate! My former co-worker (who is German and now lives there again) sent our office a nice package of treats to munch on before the holidays–thank god for her. Alas, I resisted the chocolate until lunch today. I also couldn’t resist the temptation of Haribo Frogs. For some reason, they seem to be softer from Germany.

I particpated in my third Zumba class tonight. It was challenging in the middle of the class. There were new dance moves and songs and I couldn’t catch onto the moves. I laughed with another girl in front of me and admitted out loud that I was lost. After class, I lifted weights for my legs. I haven’t been in the workout room in a while to go on machines or the weights. It’s been all classes lately and I miss the workout room.

Dinner was an Arnold Thin with sweet peppers, brie, chipolte mayo and oregano. It tasted yummy! I also had some carrots on the side and a Fig Newman. Like many of the Newman’s Own Organics products, these tasted like Fig Newtons, only less sweet.

I have more energy tonight and will not fall asleep on the couch!

Time to use that energy to wash dishes and pick up around the house. Night!

My second try at Zumba

Today was much happier than yesterday. I only cried once when my dad wrote me an e-mail that said he still is in the habit of turning on the light for Garfield at night. :(

I tried Zumba for the second time tonight. It was a good class again. I think I actually did worse this time trying to keep up with the steps. I didn’t have anyone in front of me directly who was coordinated that I could follow. Next time, I won’t be late and forced to go into the corner of the gym. While doing Zumba, I was thinking to myself, “this is my fun workout of the week.” Yoga is my calming workout, body pump is strengthening and challenging and so is boot camp. I spoke to an older lady next to me at one point and she said to me in her thick foreign accent, “I like this class. It is fun. I could be on the treadmill for an hour and time goes so slowly. With this, time goes by so quickly and it’s fun.” She must have read my mind. I agreed completely.

Breakfast was Kashi Autumn Wheat. I figure it’s “almost” winter (next week is when the season technically starts, even though it’s freezing cold where I live) and I should be eating up anything labeled autumn!

Autumn Wheat and coffee

My morning snack was half of a sprite bottle and almond poppy seed bread baked by my mama. I only drink soda occasionally. Sometimes when my stomach is bugging me, I crave a sprite.

Lunch was a NuttZo and strawberry jelly sandwich on wheat, Oikos Stonyfield plain yogurt that I mixed with sliced almonds and local honey from Oconomowoc. I am on an almond kick lately. I also had some homemade Christmas cookies for dessert. One was a mint and chocolate kind my mom made for us and then my peanut butter dough balls.

Lunch on 12-15-10

Craig made yummy Trader Joe’s 4 Formaggi pizza for dinner and it was ready when I got home from Zumba, so that was a nice surprise. I had two slices and made some brussel sprouts spiced with three different Penzey’s spices.

Dessert was a dough ball, of course!

This is how our cats look in the morning, waiting for their “food food.” We trained them to know the word food and anytime we say something that even sounds like it, they freak out. They swirl around our feet in the morning until Craig or I announce “food food” and they run to their food bowls.

For once I am not blogging an hour before my bedtime and I actually have more time tonight to relax and read. My mom gave me a whole bunch of magazines yesterday, so I am going to chill out with those on the couch.

Holiday pot luck & my first Zumba class

Today’s breakfast is pictured here.

Lunch was a holiday pot luck party, so there is no picture of my plate. I ate little portions of lots of things. I also had lots of fruit desserts and surprisingly, wasn’t craving chocolate at all today!

I brought something to the potluck that I knew I would eat–fresh veggies. Cucumbers, grape tomatoes and baby carrots. Everyone loved the Santa plate I brought too.

After a food coma at work, I knew I needed something peppy to add to my afternoon. I looked a the YMCA schedule and decided to try Zumba for the first time tonight.

It was a lot of fun. I was a little nervous, as I told my friend, who is a Zumba teacher, I am not so coordinated. The class was packed and the women in my class seemed to love Zumba (they even wear shirts that say I heart Zumba, etc.) I loved the first song and the moves best–Enrique Iglesias’s “Baby I Like It” and the Indian inspired dance. There were some other songs that I couldn’t follow the moves with as well. I think it would take me about 6 or 7 classes to get the dances down pat. At one point in the class, I said to myself, “I feel like I am at a middle school dance trying to dance naughty to get noticed.” Maybe it’s just me, but the moves reminded me of that time of my life!

To learn the steps, I watched people in front of me because I don’t do well with watching teachers who are facing the class. I am sure I will try it again. I really do like Boot Camp, Body Pump or Yoga better, but Zumba will be fun to change up my workout once in a while.

I arrived home from the Y with tons of energy. Craig laughed at how chatty I was.

I made a nice red quinoa dish with feta cheese, tomatoes, roasted red peppers and chickpeas. I mixed it with some Penzey’s spices, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Oh and a glass of red wine was perfect with it!

Now it’s time to relax and read with my adorable Karma sleeping by my side.
