Monday off

I had this Monday off because I work on Saturday. I am also hoping for this Wednesday off because of the snow!

Originally, I wanted to treat myself to a matinee movie of The King’s Speech. Those plans all changed as I ate the breakfast below (Stonyfield plain yogurt with Jessica’s almond cherry granola, fresh blueberries, chia seeds and a bit of almond milk; coffee; and a jalapeno cornbread muffin I had to save for a mid-morning snack because I was too full from my main meal).

You see, the last in the trilogy of the Stieg Larsson books was due back to the library today. I still had about 150 pages to read. Well, I stayed on the couch, snuggled with Karma and read the rest of the book. It moved fast at the end, but I think I read for about an hour and a half straight!

By the time I finished reading, I really felt like moving and going to the gym instead of showering and heading to a movie theater to sit for two hours. I sat enough (and napped) all weekend! The gym was calling me and I headed there for a good two hours.

Before the gym, I needed something to hold me over until the end of my workout. I snacked on half of a peanut butter cookie Larabar.

Walking into the gym, a cute little toddler girl was walking out way ahead of her mom and into the round driveway where cars pull up quite often. I looked at her mom’s face and immediately turned around to stop the little girl. It was a scary moment for her mom, who was tied up with a little boy in her arm. She was very grateful for what I did and then the guy who checked me into the Y said to me, “you saved that little girl.” It was my good deed for the day.

I worked out on the elliptical for 45 minutes. Blame HGTV and an American looking for a house in the French countryside. Aaah, they get me every time with International House Hunters. I also did a full circuit of weights and then called it quits, because it was a little after 1 p.m. at this point.

The snow was coming down pretty badly when I was driving back and I was glad to get off the slushy roads. Sadly, this is just the beginning of the snow for us this week!

For lunch, I made a buffalo tofu wrap for lunch with a whole wheat tortilla, spinach and swiss cheese.

This meal filled me up! I probably will bring the same thing for lunch tomorrow too. Tofu is the perfect food for me because I normally don’t eat a lot of protein and subsequently, don’t feel full and want to snack a couple of hours after a meal. With tofu, I always feel full until my next meal.

After lunch, I got to work on dumping photographs from iPhoto onto my Lacie hard drive. I really need to make photo books out of each season or year. Otherwise, digital photos just sit on my hard drive. Blogging has also caused rows and rows of food pictures to sit in my iPhoto. I need to clear those off my computer, because really, what am I going to do with all of them?

I headed out in the snow again to return my book and dvd to the library. Then it was time to shovel some of the driveway until my hands were so freezing cold that I couldn’t stand it anymore.

Off to get ready to head out again with Craig! We’re going to look at one more eyeglass place and then hopefully order some new glasses for him tonight.

Header help!

See how funny my header looks? I have been trying to use Picnik to create a header for my blog and upload it to wordpress. The required size for my theme is 900 x 180 or something like that. I create the header as 500 x 180 in Picnik to keep the dimensions correct. Look how fuzzy it uploads and it won’t let me upload the whole header I created. After I upload the picture to wordpress’s header page, it takes me to a page where I have to crop it. See image below.

The width is correct, but it forces me to crop part of the image (the top and bottom) so it looks weird like this example header. Even at 200 x 90, it still wanted me to crop it.

Argh! It’s frustrating. Anyone have tips?

Outdoor biking bliss (only in my dreams)

Where did the day go? I woke up somewhat early, watched CBS Sunday Morning, read a bit of the paper and ate this cereal for breakfast:

I did some research on my husband’s desktop Mac and then was hungry again mid-morning.

I had a mini bagel with strawberry cream cheese.

After I showered, I was hungry yet again! I craved a green monster, so I blended one up with spinach, frozen pineapple, a fresh banana, Soy protein powder, ice and Silk Almond Milk.

I also had an attune raspberry chocolate probiotic bar.

That was kind of my lunch for today. I didn’t feel too hungry around lunch time and started reading my book again. Unfortunately, reading makes me really sleepy lately and I fell asleep on the couch for the second day in a row. I woke up with Karma the cat by my side and we were sleeping in the exact same position. Is it weird that my cat and I end up sleeping the same way?

Anyway, I was sad when I woke up because I had been dreaming I was in Sweden, biking on my Trek bike and enjoying nice warm weather. The Sweden setting in my dream definitely came from reading the Larsson book. Biking outside–well let’s just say that I have been thinking about biking outside a lot and how much I miss it and the nice weather.

Here I am on my bike on Craig’s 30th birthday last summer. I surprised him by asking his boss if he could be off of work, made him breakfast in bed and we went for a beautiful 14 mile bike ride along Lake Michigan.

Aaah, I miss summer.

When I got up, I was in the mood to bake. I used a cornbread muffin mix and added jalapenos to it. We froze a bunch of jalapenos from our garden last summer and they are super hot. My hands are literally burning from cutting up the jalapenos two hours ago!

I kept the oven on and made buffalo tofu. This was my first time baking tofu in the oven and it turned out pretty good.

I added it to a spinach salad with feta cheese, tomatoes and an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing.

Well, I am feeling lazy this weekend and not sure I will hit the gym today. I definitely will be going there tomorrow. I have the day off because I work this Saturday. I plan on working out, going to see a matinee of The King’s Speech and to shop at the mall.

I am crossing my fingers for the big snowstorm this week! Not that I want the snow, but if we get a foot, I definitely will be working from home or just taking the day off. It could hit the Midwest on Tuesday or Wednesday. I would rather have it come now than on the day we have to leave for Florida.


I unplugged from the world yesterday and didn’t boot up my iBook, so I didn’t blog and now I am catching up. Sometimes it just feels good not to be plugged into a computer for a day, don’t you agree? It’s funny because I still did go on my iPod touch and looked a few blogs, but it seemed like a lot of bloggers were doing what I did and didn’t post on Saturday.

I am still on the fence about whether or not I will blog while we are in Florida. I don’t really want to lug my laptop along and I am not sure if our hotel room has a safe or not. I hate worrying about something happening to it while we are on vacation.

I woke up early yesterday and got to the beauty school for my 8 a.m. appointment. Two hours and lots of talking with my really nice stylist later…I was a bright blonde again!



I came home and Craig said, “hello Marilyn Monroe!”

My hair is naturally blonde, it’s just that dirty blonde as my dad always called it. It seems dull and boring, especially when I have been inside all winter and there is no sun to lighten my strands. It feels good to be a bit brighter again! I feel so sunny.

After running an errand and doing some stuff around the house, I was ready for a nap. Had this for lunch first.

And then took an hour and a half nap on the couch!

When I woke up, I was hungry again and snacked on an attune mint chocolate bar.

Craig and I went eyeglass shopping for him. We technically can get free glasses every year with our vision plan and he never takes advantage of it.

He found a pair he liked and surprisingly, I also really liked them.

We ran to a few more eye places because like me, my husband likes to research and explore all of his options before settling on something. We treated ourselves to dinner at Qdoba. I had the chicken tortilla soup and a naked burrito with no meat.


At night, we watched The Kids are All Right. It was a really good movie–different than we both thought it would be. I would recommend it, but maybe my parents’ generation wouldn’t like it?

More Zumba

Oh Friday, how I longed for you all week!

I started out my last day of the work week with a lot of Jessica’s chocolate chip granola. (I over-poured the milk on accident and had to compensate). I also had some cantaloupe because it has to be eaten up before it goes bad.

Lunch was a spinach salad with grape tomatoes, Athenos hummus, Athenos feta cheese, cucumber slices and green pepper. I also added a Musselman’s Granny Smith Applesauce and Dannon Activia Dessert yogurt in Vanilla Bean to my lunch bag.

My real dessert wasn’t that Dannon yogurt because it’s not very dessert like to me. Instead I tried the Raspberry Dark Chocolate attune bar out. I would say it is equally as tasty as the mint chocolate one.

When I got home from work, I quickly did a load of laundry, some dishes and cleaned in general. I was clearly in a cleaning mood! I like to get as much done as possible before the weekend so I can enjoy it.

I snacked on some Pomegranate Newman’s Own Organics licorice.

Dinner was a Boca cheeseburger with Swiss cheese on an Arnold’s Thin.

Zumba tonight with Angie was fun! I can’t believe I did Zumba two days in a row. I feel like an addict. There were a lot of new songs and moves again.

Tomorrow morning, I am getting my hair highlighted, which will eat up half of the day because it’s at a beauty school. It’s half the price of a regular salon and I need to read The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest anyway, so I don’t mind if it takes a little longer than normal.

It’s late and I just got home from a Zumbathon in downtown Milwaukee, which was sponsored by Lululemon. There were probably 100 plus women and men there tonight! Crazy!

We danced in the Astor Hotel ballroom for an hour and fifteen minutes. Jenny is new to Zumba too. Even though I probably have done it 7 or 8 times now, I had trouble keeping up because there were so many new songs they played. It was fun, put a smile on my face and great to workout with friends.

Before picking Jenny up for the Zumbathon, I headed to the Milwaukee Public Market for the second day in a row. This time I got dinner there at The Green Kitchen.

Rewind to lunch…I didn’t take a photo, but it was the rest of my Subway footlong from yesterday, a bunch of carrots and a Dannon Activia vanilla dessert yogurt. Later in the afternoon, I snacked on a pink lady apple and a mint chocolate attune bar.

Breakfast today was fresh blueberries & Jessica’s Gluten Free Granola in Almond Cherry. I think I liked the Vanilla Maple flavor better, but this was still really good.


That’s all folks. It’s time to relax a little and then get to bed. I can’t believe how quickly this week has gone by. I guess it’s because I have been working weird hours and been doing stuff after work a couple of days this week.

Solutions for eczema

Every winter, I get a case of eczema on my middle finger of my right hand. Yes, my middle finger, cue the giggles. I also seem to get irritation on my neck, chest, and left ear. I have tried the steriod cream from my dermatologist and it just is so greasy feeling and doesn’t really seem to solve my problem all that well, even with consistent applications.

I wrote Weleda skincare back in December and asked if I could review one of their products. They recommended Skin Food and I have been trying it off and on for the last month or so. I put it on my neck, chest and hands before bed.

I love the scent of Skin Food. The cream is not incredibly thick and sinks into my skin nicely. I also love that the product is a natural one. I tend to think these work better for my skincare woes than something full of chemicals.

Besides the Skin Food, I have been using Dove Winter Care soap. I am a shower gel girl, but this bar of soap seems to also have helped my skin for the last two winters.

I would definitely recommend Weleda Skin Food for skincare issues like mine. I haven’t tried any of their other products, but have been wanting to for sometime now, so when I run out of others in my cabinet, I will most likely purchase some Weleda.

Haircut & lunch with mom

I started my Wednesday with a mini bagel and strawberry cream cheese, with a side of cantaloupe.

Instead of going to work at my usual time, I got my haircut at 8 a.m.

I really liked the new stylist I went to this morning. She gave me more face framing layers, even though she could tell I was scared of getting them back again because I have had very short layers around my face before and they didn’t look good.

In order to get free parking at the Milwaukee Public Market while I got my haircut nearby, I bought this delicious Door County Cherry scone at C. Adams bakery and had my parking ticket validated.

Love anything with Door County cherries in it! I snacked on it at work, because the cup of coffee I had while getting my haircut made me a bit shaky. I can’t wait to eat the other half tomorrow.

Lunch was with mom. She came to my workplace and then we walked to Subway for sandwiches.

I had half (and a few bites of the other half) a ham and provolone on 9-grain honey oat.

I am not a huge fan of black licorice, so I brought my mom the package I received from Newman’s Own Organics. I did try a few bites and it was really good.

Mom is a great quilter and sewer, so I asked her to make me a yoga mat strap. She brought it along today and here is the end result.

Since I went into work late, I had to stay late. I had some hot chocolate and an attune probiotic mint chocolate bar to perk me up.

Yum! I really enjoyed the attune bar. I will be trying them for the next two weeks straight, so you’ll see a bar on the blog every day now. I hope it helps my tummy! I wrote attune when I heard about them through Meals and Miles and they sent me a week of raspberry dark chocolate and a week of mint chocolate probiotic bars.

I haven’t revealed this on the blog before–I have Ulcerative Colitis. I need all of the probiotics I can get. Having Irritable Bowel Disease is one of the other reasons I wanted to start this blog. Since eating healthier and exercising more in the last year or so, I have noticed a difference in how I feel with IBD. I am glad I can track what I eat every day and how I feel in general through writing this blog.

Dinner tonight was a falafel sandwich.

American Idol is airing their Milwaukee episode and I have to go watch it now! No sighting of me in the background of any shots yet. Bummer. 😦

A good day

Despite being disappointed about Boot Camp class yesterday, I am sore in my legs today. I credit the squats we did in warmup and the squats I did with a heavy medicine ball on the bosu.

Breakfast was a fried egg on an English muffin and some cantaloupe on the side. The cantaloupe tasted so good. I cut it up before bed last night and couldn’t stop eating it!

Snack at work was a hot chocolate and a few raw almonds.

Lunch was minestrone soup and I threw some pita chips into it, which reminded me of tortilla soup. I love tortilla soup and really should make it at home sometime because Craig likes it too. I also had some grape tomatoes and a pink lady apple. Lots of red foods going on for my lunchtime eats!

I had quite the sweet tooth today! Upon arriving home, I needed a piece of Newman’s Own Organics tangerine licorice.

Dinner was a whole wheat tortilla with salsa, tomatoes, lettuce, pinto beans, taco flavored shredded cheese and some Penzey’s A Mural of Flavor spice sprinkled on top.

I was craving peanut butter and had some Reese’s pb chips. Told you I had a sweet tooth tonight!

Yoga tonight was great. My favorite teacher was back! He just radiates positivity, which is what I need during my work week! My friend Angie had never had class with him and she also noticed that he is so happy. My body was sore, so the stretching felt wonderful.

Now I am watching a travel show about Amsterdam and the Netherlands in general and remembering our honeymoon in Europe, wishing I was going back there soon.


We visited Amsterdam after being in a couple of German cities. We both got really ill on our second day there, especially my husband. I remember going through the Van Gogh museum feeling ready to faint. I was so happy to have seen the Almond Blossom painting though because it is one of my favorite paintings of all time.

At least we got to the Anne Frank house before feeling totally sick on that second day. I loved seeing where her family lived. Seeing her diary and her room brought me to tears though.

Oh, these darn travel shows! I have the itch to travel to Europe again. Or maybe our next big trip will be a tour in India?

I am getting my haircut tomorrow morning! It’s been three months since my last cut and my hair is getting super long. I’ll post before and after pics tomorrow. I am also getting my hair highlighted on Saturday, so I’ll feel all refreshed again after this weekend.

All in all, it was a good day. After a not so great Monday, I was happy to be productive, yet not stressed all day.
