Ups and downs

“Looking down” was the subject for today’s photo…so here I am looking down while waiting to transfer to a second bus. Normally, I don’t take two buses, I just take a freeway flyer and that is so much easier and relaxing! But, I have to take a different route when I am required to leave early for an appointment, which is what I had today.

Looking down again at my hungry cat. The problem is that it was about 4 hours before dinner time for Karma and when I come home at any time during the day, he scurries to the food bowl. Oh cats. They’re so crazy and fun.

I drove the country roads to my husband’s work this afternoon. We had a our health risk assessments and they went well. Both of us had very healthy numbers for cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. I did admit that I don’t like my job and need a new one, because I do get too stressed over my current one. Not good to have the flight or fight response surging through my body. I know this and I am grateful that meditation helps me calm down.

Then it was off to my parents’ house for dinner! Mom made a brownie that had blondies on the bottom. Yummy!

She also purchased this drink today and I was happy to try it. It was delicious! Didn’t taste like soy at all.

I LOVE this picture I captured of my dad. He was trying almond milk for the first time and didn’t love it. He said, “it tastes like nothing.” I disagree because I love almond milk, especially in smoothies.

We had BLTs for dinner! I haven’t had a BLT in ages and both Craig and I love them. I just don’t love cooking the bacon because it grosses me out.

I hit the gym after and also got good news on my phone when I returned home. One of my goals for 2011 was to take a photography class, but I never got around to it. This spring, I tried to get into an Advanced Digital Photography class and it was full, so I put myself on the waiting list. I heard that I got into the class, so I look forward to refreshing my photography skills and learning manual mode again in a couple of weeks. I haven’t taken a photography class since college.

The ups and downs for the day included:

-ups: a half day of work, going to two Targets (my happy place), visiting my husband’s work, dinner with my parents and obviously, getting into that class.

-downs: not being approved for workmans’ comp for various reasons. Stupid ankle. No more treatment on it unless it involves surgery. I’m done. I hate our health insurance in this country. So stupid.

Taking the icky bus. Rain.

Gotta go-there’s a special on Costco on Rock Center I want to watch right now! Have a great night!

Riding the bus

This post will be a little random, but that’s because I am not blogging every day, so it’s only natural I guess.

I am almost done with my lactose free challenge–just two more days or maybe I will be cutting out lactose for life! We’ll see.

Over the last week, I’ve definitely snacked a lot less, learned that my body needs more protein without my daily greek yogurt fix, and my stomach has been pretty well behaved overall.

I’ve learned that I love vanilla and plain almond milk, but I am not the biggest fan of soy milk.

almond milk, granola, Love Grown bag, coffee

I finished off one bag of Love Grown granola and it has been a wonderful snack and breakfast item to have in the house.

I took the bus to work for the first time ever today.

I wish we had some kind of commuter rail in Milwaukee, but this is fine I guess. I have to pick the bus up at a freeway flyer to save time, which means I have a pretty direct route without many stops, and I also will avoid waiting in the snowy weather when that hits. So, today was my “test” run to see if I would enjoy it.

bus view

I loved taking the bus. I was so much more relaxed when I got to work and it’s because I wasn’t battling rush hour traffic on the way there. Ever since back to school, the roads were just getting too unbearable. I can’t wait to start taking the bus on November 1st. I’ll get my kindle full of good books to read by then.

Plus, I get to catch up on my magazine hoarder pile. Today I enjoyed reading A Year of Sundays on the way to work and on the way home, kept things light with the September issue of Self.

Sorry for the fuzzy picture.

In my attempt to get more protein in my diet, I hard boiled some eggs tonight. I made most into egg salad and look forward to throwing that on some bread tomorrow for lunch. I left two to have as part of my breakfasts this week.

I like pickles in my egg salad. Maybe it’s a Wisconsin/Midwestern thing? Milwaukee’s Midget Dill pickles are the best.

I haven’t been to the gym yet and I figure it’s the perfect excuse to head to the late Bodyflow class. I have only tried Bodyflow once before as part of a Pump/Flow class. I am looking forward to it. It comes highly recommended by Karis!

The only problem with going tonight is it’s the premiere of the new Zooey Deschanel show that I wanted to watch. We are old school and don’t have a DVR. Oh well!

Shopping for a lactose free diet

Tonight, I went grocery shopping with a lactose free diet in mind. I’ll probably start my week long experiment tomorrow.

I found myself reading labels more, even though I mostly shopped the perimeter of the store. When buying sushi, I saw milk on the label and knew that I wouldn’t be able to eat the sushi rolls as leftovers for lunch tomorrow. So, I read other labels and found the vegetarian version (which I prefer anyway) didn’t have any milk.

With a $1.00 off coupon, which was doubled, I got this milk for about $1.50. Not bad. I am not the biggest fan of soy milk, but I figured I would try this kind over the next week because it has 8 grams of protein per serving.

I had a glass of it with my dinner and it wasn’t too bad.

8th Continent Soymilk

I also picked up two types of store brand almond milk: original and vanilla. I figured the vanilla might be good in my coffee. I prefer almond milk over other dairy alternative milks.

I enjoyed the sushi for dinner with some soy sauce and wasabi. I love wasabi, as long as it is in moderation.

b & w sushi

I found out that sushi is the perfect pre-gym dinner. It wasn’t heavy in my stomach and didn’t make me feel sick while I worked out. I had to get to the gym right after eating as the night was flying by. I just lifted a full circuit of weights and biked while reading the September issue of Health magazine.

There, I managed to fit in a shorter blog post and still have time to read before bed! Night!

Trying new fitness classes

One of my new goals is to try various fitness classes at my YMCA more often. I usually just attend yoga and I really enjoy doing my own thing on the cardio and weight machines. I like Zumba and Body Pump, so I should get back into those. Tonight, I tried H.A.B.I.T which stands for “Hips, Abs, Butt, Intense Thighs.” It was a 45 minute class and the time just flew by. I really enjoyed the exercises and the teacher was good. I felt like I got a good workout for all of those areas of my body, which in my opinion, are my weakest and most fatty areas. We used the ball a lot and now I even have some new exercises to try out on my own. Too bad that the class may be going away for the summer months, but I will probably try to make it on Tuesday nights through June.

After class, my legs were killing me from the wall sit with the ball we had just done, but I biked for 20 minutes and logged 7.19 miles (which made me smile because this is my husband’s birthday).

To top it off, when I got home, I still had an incredible amount of energy, especially after eating, and Craig and I then took a 20 minute walk in our neighborhood because the weather is so nice. Guess I couldn’t get enough exercise today because I did something physical for two hours straight!

I had a really good day. I took breaks to manage my stress and listened to my iPod while working in the afternoon, which kept me happy and also made me less sleepy during my afternoon slump. I also got a bit carried away with listening to the German language lessons in between music because at one point, I yelled “scheisse” really loud and my co-worker laughed. I had just made a maddening mistake and the German swear word came out naturally.

Ok enough about fitness and enough text! Onto my eats and some photos!

Breakfast was Crunchy Nut cereal with skim milk and coffee. I am finding this cereal to be too sweet for me, but sometimes all I want is cereal in the morning, so I am eating it up and dealing with the sweet taste.

Lunch was a pb and j sandwich on Trader Joe’s wheat bread, pita chips, a strawberry Chobani and a few dark chocolate covered almonds. I didn’t end up eating the apple, so I’ll save it for tomorrow.

Dinner was much needed after all of that working out! I knew what I wanted and was craving it at the gym. A green monster smoothie! I added almond milk, skim milk, chia seeds, frozen banana and of course, spinach to it. This was my first time adding chia seeds to it and I loved their addition! It was my husband’s first time trying chia seeds. He always laughs at them because he thinks of the chia pet.

While reading Amazon Daily on the kindle during my lunch break, I found an article about chia seeds and they showed pictures of chia pets, which made me laugh and think of my husband’s comments. I can’t link to the article, but the content was all stuff you probably know–how filling chia seeds are because of the protein and fiber, etc.

The unpictured aspects of my dinner were a small bowl of Chobani plain with preserves and two pieces of jack cheese.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution–for the last couple of weeks, I have been excitedly turning on the TV at 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights and expecting Food Revolution to be on. I thought something weird was going on, that or Dancing with the Stars was concluding and those finales were taking more precedence over the food crisis we are having in our nation. Well, I finally googled it today and found out it will return to Friday nights starting on June 3rd. Phew! Anyone else miss watching it? I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I really looked forward to that show each week. Can’t wait until it’s back!

Well, it’s early for once and I am off to get some reading done, per usual. Night!

Morning workout success

I got back to the gym this morning and it felt great. I got up around 5:40, meditated for 25 minutes and then was getting my workout clothes on when Craig yelled my name and said, “I think Osama Bin Laden is dead.” I replied “are you sure it’s not Gadhafi?” Of course, I looked it up right away on my nytimes app on my iPod and sure enough, it was the top story.

Anyway, back to the gym. I ran the three miles I was supposed to run yesterday and I did ok. I only ate half of a cherry pie larabar before leaving the house and I think that was perfect amount of food for my sensitive stomach. Towards mile 2, my right hip started hurting. This is the hip that seems to bug me lately, especially if I haven’t done yoga for a while. That is why I am incorporating at least two yoga sessions into my workouts this week. Once I was all sweaty and warmed up, I lifted mostly arm weights and felt pretty weak. Maybe it was because I only lifted once last week and the rest was all cardio? Anyway, noticing that made me want to stay consistent with my workouts even more now, plus try to do Body Pump more often.

It felt good to get my workout done in the morning and go into work a little later for a change. Maybe I will try that off and on throughout my work week.

Breakfast was the rest of The Greek Gods yogurt plus some plain Stonyfield yogurt with chia seeds and Bonne Maman wild blueberry preserves.

Lunch was an Amy’s Vegetable Pot Pie, string cheese, carrots, grape tomatoes and a small apple. Running this morning made me super hungry, so I grabbed a lot for lunch today and I am glad I did.

For dinner,I was just craving a smoothie, so I whipped up a strawberry banana protein smoothie using almond milk.

Well, I am heading to a Vegetarian Indian cooking class tonight through the local rec dept. I am looking forward to it because I love Indian food and want to be able to cook it for Craig and I once in a while. Here is what we are supposed to be making: Vegetarian Dahl, Basmati Rice, Vegetable Korma with Cashews, Yogurt Raita and Apple Chutney. YUM! I’ll recap the class in tomorrow’s post.

With that, I need to go to class now! Have a great Monday night.

Yoga before running = success!

Happy Thursday everyone! Hope you all have fun plans for Easter weekend. I took off of work tomorrow because my husband has off and I just needed a mental health day.

My breakfast-I didn’t feel like making stovetop oats today, we didn’t have much in terms of cereal selection, so I improvised. I made an egg white, cut up some grape tomatoes, and had a peach chobani yogurt. I used almond milk in my coffee today and it tasted good, so that might be my new replacement for half and half.

Couldn’t resist taking a picture of this. I received it in a free sample I received in the mail from International Delight (well from Vocalpoint). My happy time was obviously 5 p.m. for the day because I would be home from work by then and today is my Friday!

come back later...I'll have a much better attitude

I was really craving a coffee at work, but I resisted and had a peppermint tea instead. My snack was a Cran Bran Vita top. I started eating and then decided to warm it up in the microwave. Smart move because this improved the flavor immensely! I am going to warm up or toast the vita tops from now on. Loved the Cran Bran flavor.

Lunch was a Morningstar black bean veggie burger on an Arnold’s Thin, string cheese and some applesauce. Dessert was a hershey’s chocolate bunny from a co-worker.

After work, I went to Target and was so excited to check out the expanded grocery section of the Target I pass on my way home from work. I know, I am a total Target and foodie dork. At least I know this and can admit it. The new sections of the store were laid out and lit so beautifully. They had a lot of (cheap) produce and their prices on Chobani weren’t bad either. I was only disappointed at the fact that they didn’t have the big Chobanis. Oh and I found Bonne Maman wild blueberry preserves at a good price too. Score!

While there, I used a free coupon for Bagel Thins that I received from the company and got a package of whole wheat flavor.

Loved the flavor of the bagel thin and the fact that it was only 110 calories.

Dinner was a bagel thin with ham, swiss cheese and a side of strawberries.

Then it was off to yoga for an hour! It was a good class, per usual. I felt strong and flexible today, but my back did ache during the class and the stretching helped a lot.

After class, I wanted to go on the bike and read a magazine. Both of the bikes I prefer were taken, so I improvised and threw the biking idea out the window. Instead, I did what I was supposed to do in my 10k training schedule and I ran for 25 minutes on the treadmill and walked for two minutes. I covered 2.18 miles and I felt so strong and great. Like the subject of this post says, maybe yoga before running equals success!? If that’s the case, I better do yoga the morning of my race to stretch everything out!

At the gym, someone was watching Sex and the City on TV and I instantly wanted to watch a couple of episodes. I knew what I was going to do when I got home! I couldn’t wait to pop in the second season.

sex and the city second season

And now I better go catch up with Miranda and Steve and watch their first encounter! Were you ever obsessed with Sex and the City like I was? I have all of the seasons on DVD except season five I think. It’s fun watching the episodes this evening because I haven’t seen the show in a while and it’s like they are all new to me now.
