Beautiful Saturday for a B-day Cookout

Good afternoon! It’s a beautiful, sunny Saturday here in Southeastern Wisconsin. Probably nothing like the weather they are experiencing on the East Coast right now.

After clocking out of work at 12:05 a.m. and not getting to sleep until about 1 a.m., I slept in this morning, meditated, and went for a long walk with Craig. My legs were really sore from walking about 5 miles at work last night, but I think the walk actually helped a lot.

I really wanted to make it to the Eat Local Resource Fair at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee, but walking around at a fair and being so tired after work last night didn’t sound like it would mix too well. Plus, I didn’t want to feel so rushed today.

So instead, I painted my nails this morning.

Eek, my nails/cuticles look like they need a proper manicure. Hmm…maybe on my b-day on Wednesday?

Got excited to check out the package I received yesterday.

I won some Cascal fermented soda from Jessica at Healthy Living in America’s Dairyland. Never tried it before, but I will definitely let you all know how it is or you can head over to Jessica’s site to check out her opinion.

The sodas came in this adorable lunch bag!

Then we went to Barnes and Noble to get my nephew a gift card. I’m glad he is getting into reading and I want to encourage it with this gift card. I definitely was very into reading at his age (going into 2nd grade) and now I am a lifelong reader. It also helped my spelling skills!

And to the grocery store to pick up some good deals.

I picked up two Protein Plus PowerBars that ended up being totally free with coupons I found in Women’s Health magazine.

I used a $1.50 off coupon for some Seattle’s Best coffee.

And I used one of my free Chobani coupons the company sent after I had a bad experience with a raspberry flavored yogurt a couple of weeks ago. Great customer service on Chobani’s part–I was impressed. Now I get to have one of my favorite flavors, pomegranate, for lunch this week.

I’m quickly writing this post while watching America’s Test Kitchen. It’s an episode focused on chicken, which is sort of grossing me out. I still like learning things from the show though, even when it is very meat based cooking featured most of the time.

We’re off to a cookout for my nephew’s 8th b-day party this afternoon! Can’t wait to sit outside and enjoy a hamburger. I think this flexitarian is actually going to have a burger and hope it doesn’t affect my stomach. I have been craving meat all week.

Hope your weekend has been relaxing and fun so far!

Bloggers are taking over the bookstore!

I’m off to my in-laws’ house today for a family party, so I thought I would recap Saturday before the busy day begins. I still have to get in my workout, shower, and then we need to be at my in-laws’ house by about 12.

For lunch yesterday, I had a 6 inch Subway ham and cheese sandwich and a Godiva Iced Vanilla Bean coffee. I received the Godiva coffee from the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program and I’ll do another separate post on the coffee soon.

We headed out of the house to get Craig’s free birthday drink at Starbucks. Since he doesn’t like coffee, we got a Venti Strawberries N’ Creme.

Weird look on my face captured by Craig. I was sporting the cute starfish necklace I had received in the mail yesterday from a giveaway I won over at Stop and Smell the Wildflowers. Thanks again Amber! Love the necklace! 🙂

Next, we were off to Barnes and Noble to look around.

That is when I decided that bloggers are taking over the bookstore! Yay!

While at Bed Bath and Beyond, I was beginning to think that we’d never find a toaster that had good reviews or wasn’t cheaply made.

This one seemed cheap.

I liked the look and durability of this one, but Craig scanned in the barcode on his phone and found it didn’t have great reviews on Amazon.

Anything is better than the toaster we currently have which turns itself on! I hate having to remember to unplug it every time we use it. If only we had enough counter space for the toaster oven we own.

Enough ranting about toasters. We didn’t buy one and may just have to go with the Kitchen Aid one that is rated best on Amazon.

After a short nap on the couch, I got to the gym for a pretty good workout. I biked while reading Self magazine, pushed myself on the Cybex Arc Trainer, lifted weights, did abs with the ball, and tortured myself with various planks.

The rest of the night, I just relaxed, made a very late and random dinner, then did dishes and put laundry away since I knew I wouldn’t have much time for it today.

Dinner was a poached egg, provolone cheese, mushrooms, jalapenos, Frank’s Red Hot sauce, tomatoes, and I put Nutritional Yeast on top of the egg and tomatoes. I really couldn’t taste the yeast.

Dessert was nice and healthy–strawberries from our garden & blueberries, topped with some raw sugar.

I’ll be back tonight with a post about weird things and strangely named things families eat. One of the things we are having at the party today is not weird, but has a strange name that I had never heard of until I met my husband. Hearing the name cracks me up every time! Does your family eat anything particularly odd at parties or call certain recipes weird names?

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day everyone! Did you know that Earth Day was started by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson!?

What are you doing today or this year to improve the environment? I will keep using my reusable grocery bags at the grocery store/Target and I’ll continue to refuse a bag when I don’t need one from other stores. I also plan on buying some reusable bags for produce soon.

Craig and I woke up somewhat late this morning and it felt so good to sleep in, per usual. We finally got out of the house and went straight to Starbucks because I needed my coffee fix. I got my free earth day coffee by bringing in a reusable mug. I ordered perfect oatmeal and Craig didn’t get anything because he had his heart set on a breakfast sandwich and they didn’t serve them at that location we went to.

We also went to Barnes and Noble to look around. I paged through a Whole Living magazine and read articles like this, which basically told me to look for a new career when I took the quiz!

The good thing is that blogging as a hobby outside of my work is a healthy thing according to this article. They were just talking about having hobbies in general and I consider blogging a fun hobby that I have learned a lot from and it’s been great to connect with others who share the same interests as me.

I liked these journals–the one is appropriate for Earth Day and the other is appropriate for a food blogger! 🙂

Then we went to Panera for a free low fat wild berry smoothie. I had earned it on my panera card. Boy was it yummy! I saw the guy was using Stonyfield vanilla yogurt to make it–sweet! The consistency was not thick at all, but it still was a great smoothie.

Lunch was a bagel thin sandwich–like I had last night for dinner. Ham and swiss cheese, salad greens, mayo, hot sauce, oregano and sea salt. I had grapes on the side and a small chocolate bar for dessert.

This afternoon, we just got stuff done around the house. Laundry, dishes and general picking up for me (I know it’s earth day and I should have abstained from these two things, but I used natural laundry soap). I wasn’t feeling very good, so I skipped the gym. I also didn’t have a lot of time to build it into my schedule since I have to meditate and eat dinner before heading out of the house again.

Later on tonight, I am going to babysit my two nephews. Should be fun since they’re always entertaining to be around!

Oh and finally, in case you want to enter a fantastic giveaway–head over to Anne from fANNEtastic food’s site.
