Hey! Hope you had a good Saturday and didn’t spend it shopping in the madness that is Christmas shopping. If you want to put me in a bad mood, just put me in a store at this time of year. I wasn’t so patient today at Target. I’d much rather shop on cyber Monday and get cash back with ebates and free samples with purchases.

Just call me Oscar! (I kind of want this shirt).

Breakfast this morning was greek yogurt with cranberry orange relish and some pomegranate arils. Great way to use some Thanksgiving leftovers if I must say so myself!

Oh and since it’s only out for about the next month, I grabbed some Eggnog Latte Coffee Mate creamer. I felt like indulging in a less healthy coffee creamer and it was delicious with my coffee. Who needs Starbucks eggnog lattes when you can use a creamer at home?

Karma is cute so I can never resist including him on the blog.

I’m not very adventurous with my hair. I need to watch more videos from The Small Things Blog and learn how to do my hair properly. Adventurous for me today was putting it half up and it looking ok. I still haven’t mastered my side bangs because of my darn cowlick.

Did you see the santa stocking in the background of the picture above? It was made by my mom and I gave it to Craig our first Christmas together.

Here’s my stocking. 🙂

I’ve been craving avocado like mad lately and finally picked up two at the store last night. It tasted delicious in my tofu, black bean, Frank’s Red Hot, and cheese burrito at lunch.

It hasn’t been the most productive Saturday, but there’s still the evening. I should have some gluehwein and put the tree up tonight. That’ll get me in the spirit of the season and maybe I won’t be buying that Oscar shirt from Target after all.

Greek yogurt comparison: Chobani vanilla vs. The Greek Gods

I tried a new brand of Greek yogurt for breakfast today. My sister-in-law works close to a Woodman’s and she offered to pick me up anything I needed. I got excited because I had just run out of Chobani last week and needed a big tub again desperately. Unfortunately, Woodman’s was out of the plain, so she got me a vanilla. She also mentioned the Greek gods brand over the phone and I figured I would just try their plain. When she brought the yogurts over yesterday, I did a quick comparion of the nutritional stats and saw why the Greek gods yogurt was cheaper.

Chobani vanilla yogurt; Greek gods greek yogurt

The protein was only 4g per 4 oz serving compared to Chobani’s whopping 22 grams per 8 oz serving. I may pay extra for the Chobani, but it’s worth it to me, especially because I eat a mostly vegetarian diet. Also check out the fat content in each. 0 for Chobani’s 8 ounces, 11 grams per serving in the Greek Gods’ 4 ounce serving. Sure the sugar is higher in the Chobani, but that is because it is the vanilla flavored kind.

So, I piled strabwerries, raspberries and Bonne Maman wild blueberry preserves on top. Because I am feeling sick lately, I couldn’t eat the whole bowl. Boo. I don’t think it was the protein filling me up or anything.

The verdict? The Greek gods was just ok. I still prefer the consistency and flavor of the Chobani greek yogurt. Can plain yogurt have a “flavor?” I guess so in my opinion!

Lunch was a salad with grape tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese and lots of tofu on top. I also had a string cheese. I couldn’t eat the clementine so I saved it for my afternoon snack.

While I was meditating tonight, the UPS truck delivered my new running shoes from runningwarehouse!

Asics gel cumulus

I got 10% off of them because Kelly from Beneath It All just picked up the same shoes and got her discount through Runblogger. They were only $71.95 and I get free return shipping if I am not satisfied!

My Brooks Defyance shoes were over a year old and granted I didn’t do that much running in them over the last year, I did wear them to the gym, wore them on walks and probably while biking and playing tennis last summer.

I decided to go back to my old favorite from when I worked at a running shoe store in California! I got the Asics Cumulus 12. Since I have knee pain occasionally when running, I thought the extra cushioning would help me out. I wore them on the carpet and then for a bit on our kitchen tile and they felt so supportive and cushiony (is that a word?). I know that the feeling of the new cushion does wear out pretty quickly, but I remember that feeling lasting a while in my old pair of Asics.

I thought I would go to the gym tonight, but then it was getting late and I was hungry. Craig was making a burrito, so I also decided to do the same and used chicken, rice, greek gods yogurt instead of sour cream, cheese, Penzey’s Arizona Dreaming spice, and Frank’s Red Hot.

After eating too much food and with my stomach still giving me problems today, I decided to skip the gym and get out in nature with my husband. We went on a 25 minute walk around the neighborhood and covered a little over a mile. It felt so good to be outside, even though I missed doing my routine at the gym.

It’s time to go read blogs and some magazines! I am trying to power through my magazine pile and I managed to clear three from my huge stack over the weekend.

Tomorrow, I only have a half day of work because I have to go to Craig’s work for our annual Health Risk Assessment appointments. We get a discount on our insurance as a result, so it’s a must! After, I’m getting my haircut and a partial foil done! Can’t wait because my hair is at that nasty feeling stage–thick and the ends feel dry.

Lunch and a workout with a friend

Happy Sunday everyone, even though it’s nearly over. 😦

Breakfast this morning was vanilla yogurt with the Wild Blueberry Bonne Maman preserves.

I met my friend Danielle for lunch at Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe in Menomonee Falls.

Camille's Menomonee Falls

I laughed because she had the exact same sweater on that I did in the morning, that is until I discovered there was a hole in the seam still (my mom fixed it, but it keeps coming apart). Danielle and I used to always match in high school and it wasn’t on purpose.

Danielle at Camille's

I ordered a Paris Bistro Grilled Hot Wrap which consisted of a Honey-wheat tortilla, ham, Brie, green apples, spinach, tomatoes, and honey mustard. It can come with red onions, but I asked for those to be left off because I find that they make me really thirsty and that flavor never leaves my mouth the rest of the day.

Paris Bistro Grilled Hot Wrap, side salad at Camille's

It was really good and reminded me of a Cooking Light recipe I made a couple of months ago, except that didn’t have ham on it, which was a nice addition.

After we let lunch settle for a while and discussed life, we headed to the YMCA in Menomonee Falls. We hopped on the Cybex Arc Trainers together and Danielle announced to me that she was expecting another baby (her daughter will be 2 at the end of July). I was excited for her and had lots of questions, naturally.

We also lifted some free weights, I stretched out my sore right hip, and I did some squats on the bosu.

Since I was in the area, I went to Woodman’s to stock up on Choabni, spinach, orange juice, Nutella, Boca burgers, etc. It was packed in there, so I grabbed $50 worth of food and got out as fast as possible.

Once home, I headed guzzled some chocolate milk, ate some Haribo Frogs and went back out. Craig and I had a few errands to run–me to Victoria’s Secret for some free underwear (score) and the both of us to Half Priced Books to use the 50% off coupon that everyone else in our area wanted to also use. It was busy there! Craig found a book. Too bad because I saw a really nice vegetarian recipes book. I guess I can always get it next time they have a 50% off coupon.

Dinner was a whole wheat tortilla with rice, pinto beans, salsa, Frank’s Red Hot and cheddar jack shredded cheese.

Now I am watching Amazing Race and fancying some of the peppermint tea I bought yesterday.

Have a wonderful Sunday evening.

Snow snow, go away

I had a snowy ride into work today–I did not enjoy waking up to see snow on the ground and big flakes in the air. When is this winter weather going to end!? I am ready for flip flops, spring coats, walks around our neighborhood and biking outside.

Today’s work day was good. I was dependent on others to get tasks done and most of them were accomplished today, a day early. Love when that happens.

I started my day off with Eggo nutri grain whole wheat waffles and a banana.

Snack at work was a trail mix bar, a kit kat and a latte.

Lunch was a whole wheat tortilla filled with pintos, a bit of cheese and red peppers. I also had more carrot sticks, red peppers, an applesauce and an Athenos strawberry greek yogurt. My verdict on these greek yogurts is that I do prefer Chobani over Athenos. I don’t think I am a big fan of the separate fruit filling that you have to mix in. Don’t know why, but it seems that Chobani’s blends better.

After work, I picked up Craig and we got dinner. He was getting his oil changed. His idea of the perfect dinner was McD’s. Mine, not so much. I had a bite of his chicken sandwich and was truthfully grossed out. I opted to go to Panera bread and ordered a you pick two of french onion soup, a meditterean veggie sandwich and an apple. Much better! Tasted nice and fresh.

Fuzzy picture courtesy of my husband’s Droid phone because I forgot my point and shoot camera.

My husband went to a basketball game tonight with his sister and I was going to head to the gym and then relax. Unfortunately, I laid down for a bit and an hour and a half later, I had been out on the couch sleeping away like a baby. This is a sign I need to go to bed earlier once again.

Speaking of, I missed my workout today as a result. So, maybe I should become a morning workout person more regularly?

Check out this article from Women’s Day featuring healthy living bloggers on 10 morning workout motivators. I am trying to find that balance in my schedule and it may be better for me to get to bed early and get up early to accomplish my workout.

Rewind to yesterday afternoon and evening–I enjoyed an Awake tea with a pump of mocha (my friend told me she enjoys this combo and she was right, it’s tasty) and the new Starbucks logo was on my sleeve. I managed to get two cute t-shirts from Old Navy totally free (no tax or anything) because of a $10 coupon I got from my Banana Republic card. Now I get to spend that at Gap, BR and online too.

Starbucks new logo

Dinner last night was Potbelly’s smoked ham and swiss sub.

Potbelly sandwich

Then Craig and I went to the Guided Meditation class. It was interesting and I am glad we went. Basically, I won’t be using this type of meditation in the future, but I think visualizing through listening to a CD or podcast could work for some people over the technique I use.

We meditated a couple of times in class and during one of the sessions, I was transported to Bacharach, Germany, looking over the city and sitting in the vineyards.

Bacharach was the first stop on our honeymoon in Europe a couple of years ago and it holds a special place in my heart, so it’s no surprise that my meditation session that involved picturing a place resulted in me going there. Aaah, I wish I could go there right now to drink some riesling and eat riesling gelato (which I really did and it was delicious).

Anyway, back to reality. Bedtime is approaching and since one of my new goals is to get to bed earlier, I better go get ready.

Eye candy

What an indulgent weekend. Last night, I indulged in yummy food with a Kopps cheeseburger and vanilla custard.

Today, I indulged in the best eye candy: Matt Damon in The Adjustment Bureau. (Side story: after I told my parents I liked the movie, my dad told my mom that I could have gone to see a still picture of Matt Damon up on the movie screen, stared at it for two hours, and still would have come out so happy). I went to see his new movie with my friend Laurie this afternoon.

We both really liked it a lot. In fact, it was really different than we both expected it to be, but in a good way. Even though it’s considered scifi/fantasy and not realistic, it got me thinking outside the box. Those are the best kind of movies. I went to the grocery store after dropping Laurie off and felt so weird. I felt like I was controlling how things happened to me, including needing a Kashi cereal box off the back of the shelf, trying to get it and a man instantly coming over to lift up his son to get it for me. I don’t know why, but the movie made me feel so odd and contemplative the whole time I grocery shopped!

Rewind to this morning–my tummy hurt a bit this morning from the Kopps cheeseburger. My body definitely doesn’t love red meat and I blame it on my colitis. I have problems digesting it and know this, but sometimes my body just needs red meat, like last night. I pay the consequences in the end and did this morning. I didn’t feel sick, but my tummy just hurt and I did not feel like going to the gym in that condition.

I had raisin bread, a black cherry chobani and coffee for breakfast.

So, I showered, got ready for the day and we went to a local flower shop to pick up this beautiful “spring garden” plant.

Craig’s work kindly sent us this plant in sympathy for his grandma’s passing. Now we are reminded of her by this beautiful spring plant. Makes me want spring to come soon so we can plant flowers and our vegetable garden!

I also popped in Sentry grocery store for some more greek yogurt–this time it was Athenos brand instead of Chobani on sale for $1. This will be my first time trying it, so I’ll let you know my opinion. Have you tried it yet?

athenos greek yogurt

Then it was time to do laundry, dishes, clean up and get ready to head out of the house again for the movie.

Oh and I ate a burrito and KIND plus bar before heading back out.

KIND plus bar

Loved that bar…I ordered a bunch from drugstore.com, along with some cashew cookie larabars, the weleda lavender oil and some cleansing cloths for my face. All were natural products because I got a shopping bag full of all natural food and beauty samples. If the deal is still on–check it out and just order a certain amount of natural products to get yours free.

Dinner tonight was homemade pizza. My half had mushrooms, red peppers and pepperoni.

homemade pizza

Washed the pizza down with an Amber woodchuck cider. Aaah, made me a bit buzzed. I was super happy and chatty.

Meditation calmed me down and sobered me up. Boo. I was enjoying my buzz!

What a nice little Saturday!

Almost bedtime–have a good rest of your weekend. I’ll be blogging sometime tomorrow, but I also have to work in the afternoon, so it may be later at night.

Movie day

Today was movie day, in honor of the Oscars of course! We finally got to the theater to see The King’s Speech. I really enjoyed it and so did Craig. I also find Colin Firth to be extremely attractive. I explained to Craig the whole Mr. Darcy Pride and Prejudice thing, but he doesn’t get it that I would like “an old man.” There is something about Colin though–I think his eyes exude kindness and vulnerability. I hope he wins Best Actor tonight! His acting was superb in the movie and I enjoyed learning more about the Royal family.

Breakfast today was french toast! I am not sure if I have ever made it before. I used a recipe off of my half and half bottle from Target. Craig hadn’t had it with vanilla extract and cinnamon before and said it tasted different. I loved it with those ingredients because I don’t think my mom made it with those when I was growing up. It tasted like it was made in a restaurant.

french toast

I completely forgot that I wanted to add some Nutella to it until my last two bites, so I added some and it was pure bliss.

I ate a quick burrito with refried beans, cheddar cheese and Frank’s Red Hot before we went to the movie.

For some reason, the movie made Craig and I tired so we napped when we got back. I slept way too long and then got up to go to the gym.

I did 10 minutes on the rowing machine, 16 on the bike while reading about Happiness in Real Simple magazine and lifted weights on a few machines and some free weights.

Dinner was a mango pineapple smoothie with protein powder.

And two pieces of frozen pizza with some added broccoli.

Dessert was a Fit & Active mint chocolate ice cream sandwich.

Ok, time to switch the laundry, look around on the internet a bit and then it’ll be bedtime before I know it!

Hope your weekend was an excellent one.

A good day

Despite being disappointed about Boot Camp class yesterday, I am sore in my legs today. I credit the squats we did in warmup and the squats I did with a heavy medicine ball on the bosu.

Breakfast was a fried egg on an English muffin and some cantaloupe on the side. The cantaloupe tasted so good. I cut it up before bed last night and couldn’t stop eating it!

coffee, egg sandwich, cantaloupe

Snack at work was a hot chocolate and a few raw almonds.

Lunch was minestrone soup and I threw some pita chips into it, which reminded me of tortilla soup. I love tortilla soup and really should make it at home sometime because Craig likes it too. I also had some grape tomatoes and a pink lady apple. Lots of red foods going on for my lunchtime eats!

lunch 1-25-11

I had an afternoon snack of Yogi green tea kombucha and a small square of dark chocolate.

I had quite the sweet tooth today! Upon arriving home, I needed a piece of Newman’s Own Organics tangerine licorice.

Dinner was a whole wheat tortilla with salsa, tomatoes, lettuce, pinto beans, taco flavored shredded cheese and some Penzey’s A Mural of Flavor spice sprinkled on top.

After dinner, I had a bowl of Neopolitan ice cream.

I was craving peanut butter and had some Reese’s pb chips. Told you I had a sweet tooth tonight!

Yoga tonight was great. My favorite teacher was back! He just radiates positivity, which is what I need during my work week! My friend Angie had never had class with him and she also noticed that he is so happy. My body was sore, so the stretching felt wonderful.

Now I am watching a travel show about Amsterdam and the Netherlands in general and remembering our honeymoon in Europe, wishing I was going back there soon.

We visited Amsterdam after being in a couple of German cities. We both got really ill on our second day there, especially my husband. I remember going through the Van Gogh museum feeling ready to faint. I was so happy to have seen the Almond Blossom painting though because it is one of my favorite paintings of all time.

At least we got to the Anne Frank house before feeling totally sick on that second day. I loved seeing where her family lived. Seeing her diary and her room brought me to tears though.

Oh, these darn travel shows! I have the itch to travel to Europe again. Or maybe our next big trip will be a tour in India?

I am getting my haircut tomorrow morning! It’s been three months since my last cut and my hair is getting super long. I’ll post before and after pics tomorrow. I am also getting my hair highlighted on Saturday, so I’ll feel all refreshed again after this weekend.

All in all, it was a good day. After a not so great Monday, I was happy to be productive, yet not stressed all day.

Goodbye Garfield

On my way home from work tonight, I called my dad and he told me to call him back when I got home. I said, “did something bad happen?” and he said, “just call me when you get home.” I replied back, “is it Garfield, did he die?” And my dad said yes. I knew his time was coming soon, as with my other bird, I took one look at Garfield at Thanksgiving and knew he was at the end of his life.

Garfield is the last of my childhood birds that was left. He lived with my parents, but I truly enjoyed visiting with him when I went to their house. He died this afternoon and will be missed. I grew up with cockatiel birds, 5 of them in fact over time. I had Garfield since I was 9 or 10. He was originally called Felix and I loved Garfield the cat, so I named him another cat cartoon name. Rest in peace little birdie, I’ll miss your chirping, tough guy bites, enthusiasm for fresh bread, love of baths in the bathroom sink, pretty pretty bird songs and you looking at yourself in the mirror or lamp base.

No pain, no gain

The perfect title for today is “no pain, no gain.” It isn’t creative, but describes exactly how I am feeling due to Body Pump yesterday! I think the squats and lunges made my thighs and quads hurt the most. I hurt all day long. Thinking about it, I don’t believe we stretched our legs after class. I will have to do that on my own from now on, because the abs and tiny bit of arm stretching won’t cut it.

Our Indian dinner was yummy yesterday. My pictures are horrible, but I will share anyway. The lighting in the restaurant was not conducive to no flash photography!

Naan and paneer tikka masalaIndian food

I had two pieces of naan and two helpings of rice and paneer tikka masala. Craig got chicken tikka masala. We also had a Mango Lassi and a Mango milkshake. We had never tried the milkshake before and it was a little lighter than the lassi. I think we both concluded that we like the lassi more. I was so full at the end and bloated. It was well worth it for yummy food that I am not sure I could duplicate in my own kitchen. Plus, I had leftovers for lunch today!

I snacked on some Halloween candy while I watched The Amazing Race.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Candy Corn

I made overnight oats for breakfast this morning. I mixed canned pumpkin, non-fat organic TJ’s yogurt, skim milk, chia seeds, flax seeds (for the overnight portion). This morning, I added dried currants, almonds, topped with a bit of greek yogurt and honey. I warmed it up in the microwave, since I seem to like that better than cold oats, especially as the temperatures outside drop and I am seeking warmer, comforting breakfasts.

Overnight oats

Overnight oats and coffee

Lunch was Indian leftovers with red grapes and a Reese’s peanut butter cup.

I also snacked on some almonds, candy corn and had a green earl grey tea to wake me up a little in the afternoon. Monday afternoon sleepiness hit me at about 3 p.m. and I remember that happening last Monday too. I need more sleep on Sunday night!

I napped after work and then forced myself to eat early, even though I wasn’t that hungry. I had to get some food in me well before heading to boot camp.

Pinto beans with whole wheat tortilla, shredded cheese and Frank's Red Hot

Boot camp tonight was tough at first with my painful legs. Luckily, we didn’t do many leg exercises. We did chest presses on the swiss ball, jumped rope, ran the basketball court, scooters (for abs), balancing on the bosu and passing the weighted medicine ball to each other, scoops with resistance bands and things in between and at the end. The end was lots of arms with resistance bands. I bet I will be walking like a freak tomorrow with sore arms and legs!

It’s 8:40 and I need to get off of this computer and do something else. I also want to get to bed a little earlier tonight so I don’t feel so sleepy tomorrow.
