Dunkin’ disappointment

Last week, I went to the Dunkin’ Donuts closest to my work to use my free birthday drink coupon, courtesy of DD rewards. Most birthday rewards coupons I receive rarely result in any problems. Unfortunately, this one did and I wanted to share my experience, especially since it wasn’t a positive one.

When you sign up for their rewards program, you get one drink free and then another coupon for a free medium drink for your birthday. The coupons look like this.



My coupon explicitly stated that I would receive one free medium drink of my choice, including a coolatta. The coolatta was the most expensive drink on the menu and something I normally wouldn’t order, so I wanted to try it.

As I presented the coupon to the cashier and asked if the Oreo Coolatta would be fine to order, she said no but proceeded to scan my coupon anyway. I explained that I wouldn’t want the drink if that particular location would not honor it. I did explain that the coupon said that a coolatta was included. She looked at the coupon and said no it was not. Then another DD worker did the same and said it was not included. I had to point out explicitly where it said it was included and then they finally believed me. I don’t like it when companies don’t pay attention to the details on their coupons or when their staff doesn’t really read them.

I guess the main problem came from not being able to cancel out my drink order with the coupon and get the register to recognize it as being a free item. The cashier said fine, they’d honor it, but it had to be a small drink, not a medium. At this point, I just wanted to redeem the coupon and get out of there, knowing I’d never return to that location again. I won’t return there not because I was embarrased or anything, but because their service hasn’t been friendly on more than three occasions.

I apologize for the rant. I did write Dunkin’ Donuts and complained on their site. I still haven’t received a reply.

Also, I don’t want it to sound like I am ungrateful for getting this free item. I am saying that the service at that location needs to change because they are turning customers away.

All I want is for others to learn from my negative experience. Get your free Starbucks drink for your birthday instead. I don’t have problems with that birthday coupon and the staff there is always friendly. Plus I like their coffee better anyway. 🙂

Any readers have a similar negative experience they want to vent about? Sometimes it just feels good to get it out! I normally am not that defiant in such a situation, but I had had enough.

What I ate and drank in Door County

This past weekend, Craig and I headed up to my favorite place in Wisconsin: Door County. Basically for all of you non-midwesterners, it’s the peninsula of Wisconsin or the part that sticks out into upper Lake Michigan.

I thought I would recap our trip by featuring what I/we ate during this post and subsequent posts will feature what we did. I love to travel and share what we experienced.

Door County is known for their cherries, so that explains why most of what I ate all weekend was cherry flavored!

We went up there on Thursday night, so on Friday morning, we woke up to eat a hearty meal at Al Johnson’s in Sister Bay. It’s a Swedish restaurant known for having a green roof, complete with grass and goats roaming on top. No goats were spotted this time, which bummed me out.



My eyes look puffy! I needed some coffee badly.


I ordered Swedish pancakes with cherries. Craig got the same thing, but with ice cream. That boy loves ice cream, so I wasn’t surprised that he would eat it for breakfast when the option was there for him to do so.

We had lingonberry juice with our meal. It was Craig’s first time trying it and he approved! I had lingonberry jam when my mom and I traveled in the Seattle area.

On Friday night, we had dinner at Wild Tomato in Fish Creek.


It was our second time dining here and the pizza was just as yummy as the first time. They use a lot of local ingredients, so everything tastes super fresh. The place was packed after we settled in for a while!

The cider I wanted to try wasn’t available, so we shared a cherry soda.


We ordered a sausage pesto pizza and it was just as delicious as it looks!

On Saturday, we went to lunch at The Cookery Restaurant in Fish Creek.

I had an Island Orchard Apple Cherry cider with my meal. It was fantastic!

I liked that the restaurant featured the local farmers & producers they purchase from by listing them on the menu.


I also liked the interior of the restaurant. We chose to eat inside, but we had a great view of the bay. There is a really nice patio to dine on outside as well.

Craig had a fish sandwich and enjoyed it.

I had a turkey cream cheese and cherry chutney sandwich. It came on toasted granola bread and had a side of house made dill potato salad and the best apple sauce I have ever had in my life!

For dessert, we got custard in Sister Bay a couple of times from Cafe Custard.




In Fish Creek, I always like to hit up the market to look for local products. I got a jar of cherry jam, as always, but this time I was feeling like cherry almond instead of just the traditional cherry. I tried some this week and it’s really good. I am wishing I had purchased a couple more jars.

And even after the Wisconsin cheese tour a couple of weeks ago, I still couldn’t stay away from cheese and had to try Renard’s curds, which were good but not as fresh as the Hooks’.

I love the chocolate cherry cookies from the Cookie Lady in Sister Bay, so I bought two of those–one to eat immediately and one to consume later!

I like the interior of this little cozy cafe too.

I brought some beer along to drink, but only consumed one of them during the whole stay. I had a New Glarus Two Women.

We concluded our stay with dinner at Fred and Fuzzy’s, which was the restaurant at our resort. That place was hopping every night! I didn’t take any photos, but we shared beer fries with Lithuanian dip and a Southwest Chicken wrap. Both were very good! Too bad this is when my stomach couldn’t hold any more food and I was in pain at the end of our meal.

By the end of the trip, I have to admit that we were sick of eating out and our stomachs really suffered from Sunday until Tuesday of this week. I am still not feeling great, but I am glad we enjoyed eating at some new places and some of our old favorites.

Coffee buzz

Hooray, it’s almost Friday!

My Thursday was quite caffeinated. I drank a cup of coffee for breakfast, brought a thermos and I scored a free almond cafe au lait at work. Needless to say, I was feeling like I had ADD and I got a ton of stuff done at work. I felt happy, talkative and productive.


Then it made me sick. Too much coffee is never good for my IBD.

I stayed at work late and was hungry when I got home, so I just warmed up one of these. I had tried this brand before and liked it. It was a yummy meal!


I topped it with Frank’s red hot, which I think I will always be obsessed with.


I watched Jeopardy while I ate.


I snickered when I saw Craig’s “girlfriend.” My husband and I saw this girl on the other night and he thought she was cute, lisp and all. 🙂 So, I teased him by sending him an e-mail with a photo of his girlfriend.


After facetiming a couple of people, including my parents, I hit the gym. Facetime is so much fun, so if you have an iPhone or iPad and haven’t tried it yet, do it!

I changed things up tonight by only wearing my hair halfway up for my workout. With my shorter hair, it’s much easier to do. Usually I only wear a ponytail with my bangs clipped back or a headband holding my hair in place.


I had a really good workout. The gym was sort of empty so I decided to partake in a bunch of moves I learned at boot camp a couple of years ago. I used the BOSU and got some weird stares (or maybe I am just paranoid). I really have grown to love the BOSU for doing pushups on, abs, balance exercises, lunges, burpees, etc. I got my heart rate up and was sweating pretty quickly! I also rowed and lifted weights. I stayed away from doing too much cardio at the gym because I knew I’d head outside once I got home.

It was gorgeous out again so I ran and walked around my neighborhood. I took my phone with me and listened to Foster the People, Florence and the Machine, Dream on by Aerosmith (loving this old song lately) and Terrified by Among Savages, one of my new favorites.


Because I felt dehydrated from my coffee overload day, I chugged a Vita Coco. I won a bunch from Laura and they arrived the other day! I love coconut water! I know my husband thinks it’s gross.


And now I am watching the documentary Food Fight so I better go pay attention to what Alice Waters, Will Allen (of Growing Power in Milwaukee, woo hoo) Marion Nestle and Michael Pollan have to say. It’s really interesting so far and making me wish I had more money when I lived in Berkeley, CA so I could have had a nice meal at Chez Panisse. Next time we go back there, we’ll definitely have to go!

Oh and I think Earl Butz alone is responsible for messing up our food system in America. Thanks Earl! Look at the mess you have created and now we are having trouble getting out of it.

Life is Precious

I had something very scary happen to me yesterday as I left work.

I walked to my bus stop as I normally do. The walk signal came on and I crossed the street. As I was halfway through the crosswalk, I saw this white car come out of nowhere and the driver was turning left right into me. Her car actually did touch my leg. The next moment was one of the weirdest I have experienced in my life. I told myself that if I didn’t get out of the way really quickly, I’d end up under her car or thrown into the street. I literally hopped to my right and looked back at the driver and gave her a look to communicate “what the hell are you doing, watch the road” and she mouthed “sorry” as if it was nothing, but I could see the shock in her face. She almost hit someone because she came down the hill too quickly, saw the green light and probably was only focusing on that, not on the pedestrian crossing in street.

I got to the corner safely, unharmed obviously, and a woman about to get on her bus asked if I was ok. As that bus pulled away, I started crying from the shock of almost having been hit. I was mad at first, but then realized that I could have been that driver and we all have close calls like that in life. I was shaky and really emotional about the fact that it could have been worse. Life is precious and in a split second, an action that you can’t control can change it.

As I sat on the bus and tried to relax, I couldn’t help but think of Emily from The Daily Garnish. She got hit by a car a year and a half ago and retells her story here. She will deal with the effects of that driver’s actions for the rest of her life.

Next time you are driving and there are pedestrians crossing, please be careful. This is why I prefer not to talk on the phone while driving anymore. I just feel too distracted.

I appreciated the fact that I could get up this morning, make my coffee, read a book and make these yummy pancakes. I could have been lying in a hospital bed instead and I am so thankful for being safe and unharmed.



Love this fluffy pancakes recipe. It was the first time I used vinegar and milk in homemade pancakes and that was definitely the trick to making them fluffy and delicious! I also liked that there wasn’t a lot of sugar in this recipe.


I’ve got to get to the gym today and watch lots of Downton Abbey! Have a lovely Saturday.

Good news

It’s lunchtime for me, so this will be brief. Happy Friday! Today is my Thursday because I work tomorrow. Boo. 😦

Just wanted to check in and say that I got my lab results from the Celiac test I had done on Tuesday. I am so relieved as the tests all came back negative. Phew! Glad I don’t have to live a gluten-free lifestyle.

I celebrated at work this morning by getting a coffee and a blueberry lemon scone.


And I ate my leftover ravioli with a smile on my face, knowing it wasn’t causing me to feel sick. 🙂


I also made some progress on the new direction my life might be headed in. I am just getting the documents I need together and I wrote an e-mail to someone to start that next step. I have to be very vague right now, but this possible new direction excites and invigorates me. It does make me a little nervous, but anything new does and taking chances is what life is all about, right?

I’ll be back later today with a fitness Friday post. Notice any good fitness stories this week? I have one that my husband found, so I’ll likely post that.

Tonight’s going to be a good night

I woke up at 8:22 today, which I saw as a lucky sign because that’s our wedding anniversary, 8/22. Then, the song that randomly was on my radio alarm was Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.” I was thinking the chorus “tonight’s going to be a good night” meant that my event tonight at work would go well. Crossing my fingers that it does!

My very filling breakfast this morning was coffee with a 2% Fage greek yogurt topped with strawberries and blueberries. I’ve been craving fruit lately and really missing the summer months when berries are in season and so tasty.


Last night, I started reading A Sense of Place and I am enjoying it so far.


Love that the first story I read is from Tim Cahill, who is a native of Wisconsin and talks about growing up in a little town called Waukesha, which is a big suburb of Milwaukee now.


This morning, I did some research on spaetzle. Turns out the type I had yesterday at Mader’s looks like this one from the Taste of Home website. So, I take back what I posted yesterday. Well, it still wasn’t very tasty or my favorite part of the meal and I was bummed because I was really looking forward to it.


After playing on the computer and letting my stomach settle, I went for a walk outside around our neighborhood. Craig and I love taking walks and I miss them, so I got some sun and exercise outdoors. It wasn’t warm, but it wasn’t freezing either.


It’s in the 30’s today and has been all week, so the snow is slowly melting. Yay!



On a random note, I changed my password for my e-mail account this week because I read this blog post. I suggest you do the same so what happened to Amber doesn’t happen to you.

Now it’s time to shower and then sign into a webinar for work! I am excited because I am passionate about the topic and hope to learn a few new things to apply to my job.

What I’ve Been Eating This Week

I’ve been taking pictures off and on this week and thought I would share some of them tonight because I wasn’t falling asleep on the couch, was in the blogging mood and I miss blogging.

On Monday, I went to my sister-in-law’s Pampered Chef party. She was celebrating a beautiful new kitchen remodel.

We had some kind of cinnamon bun with apples, guacamole and chips, bean salsa, brie and preserves with toasted baguettes, and cream cheese/preserves with crackers. I also had a glass of margarita mix.

My mom bought two items and I bought a 4 qt. collapsible bowl with a lid. This will be perfect for potlucks, parties, and for storing food in the fridge. Plus, with a tiny kitchen (wish I had a remodel like my sister-in-law and brother, but that would take expanding our house), I need all of the collapsible items I can get!

Lunch was a turkey wrap with lettuce, goat cheese, and tomatoes. I wasn’t too keen on the goat cheese flavor. Yuck. I have had it before and it didn’t seem to irritate me so much. Oh well!

Snack before the gym tonight was a whole wheat tortilla with chunky Barney Butter and a banana. This actually ended up being my dinner because it filled me up and after the gym, I wasn’t very hungry.

I am finding aspects of it quite grotesque and yet, very educational. I keep thinking about eating meat and finding it grosses me out. Even getting a turkey wrap today was difficult, but I needed some protein.

I’m watching Modern Family right now and never got into it last season, but figure I’ll give it a chance this fall.

Can’t believe it’s Thursday already tomorrow! Hooray for the week almost being over! 🙂

Fish Fry Friday

Hi everyone! Hope you had a good week. Mine flew by and I am so glad it’s the weekend!

I started my lactose free diet yesterday and it has been tough, but I love a challenge like this, especially when it means I may feel better if I watch my lactose intake in the future.

It’s only been about 40 hours lactose free, but I have noticed lots of positives. I’ll mention one–I am a lot less bloated after eating! Of course, I am eating fairly small meals overall, but my stomach not sticking out and feeling so full is a wonderful thing.

The main negative yesterday was that I almost fainted! I left work feeling fine, but as I got close to my car, I started to feel all fuzzy headed and then the world looked crooked and I almost fell to the sidewalk. I would have hit my head. I caught myself and got all composed. I had to eat a protein bar, which unfortunately, I didn’t realize until almost finished with it, had milk in it and was chocolate based. Oh well. I didn’t have much of a choice!

It was time to pull out the Libby’s Pumpkin can for pumpkin oatmeal this morning. My bananas weren’t ripe enough, so I didn’t put any in. That made the oatmeal a bit plain. I added some blueberries to get a bit of fruit into my diet instead.

I left work early today and went to a “business” lunch. It was the first time my workplace paid for me to eat lunch somewhere and attend something business oriented! That is crazy after 3.5 years there. Anyway, it was nice to eat lunch at the place we went to because it’s sort of famous in Milwaukee. I won’t say where it was because that sort of gives away my work, but I will say that we had a nice classic Milwaukee fish fry.


I was honestly a bit nervous before going because I don’t like fish and never eat it. I sucked it up and had a piece and surprisingly, I liked it. Maybe it was all of the tartar sauce I put on the fish! We also had coleslaw, rye bread, french fries, and lemon bars. Maybe I will eat fish more often now.

After the lunch, I came home to work on my work goals for the year, which is always fun. Nah, they’re really not that bad in the end. I was just happy to be able to work at home this afternoon instead of in my grey cubicle.

Just have a few things planned for this weekend–going to the Y for three hours of programming with my mom tomorrow, to look at cell phones with her, and then on Sunday I am meeting up with fellow bloggers Karis and Jessica! A pretty quiet weekend and a lot less busy than the last, which is what I prefer! I have a lot of household cleaning to get done and just want to relax in general.

It’s movie time in our household so time for me to end this post!

Lakefront Brewery Pumpkin Beer

Happy start to the three day holiday weekend! I feel bad for all of the people camping in Wisconsin this weekend because we had some really bad storms roll through last night.

I was looking back on old blog posts this morning and kind of laughing at my horrible photography and lack of photo editing. I can’t remember when I started using Flickr for my blog photos and it seems like my old photographs are so small because I was using WordPress’ photo upload system.

A year ago today, I went to Starbucks and used my free b-day drink. What a coincidence that I have plans to go to Starbucks today to do the same thing. Now that I just had my one year blogiversary, I am able to look back on what I was doing a year ago via my blog.

Last night, I opened up my first pumpkin beer of the season! I tried Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewery version and I loved the flavors.

On Thursday evening, Karis, Chris, and I were talking about what we used to eat for lunch while traveling in Europe and I said that I would grab a french baguette, some cheese, an apple, and a yogurt from the grocery store. Reminiscing about those simple meals made me want one like it for dinner. I picked up a french baguette, some chive cheddar cheese, a pink lady apple, and the Pumpkin beer while at Sendik’s. I also had some Maple Brown Cow yogurt for my dessert.

I sat outside and enjoyed my meal! I got a little tipsy off of the beer but maybe that is because I don’t drink alcohol that often. I drank it pretty quickly because it tasted so good.

Last year, Karma seemed to fall in love with pumpkin beer just as much as his mama did and I snapped a picture of him sniffing my beer bottle.

And this year was no different. As soon as he got a whif of the beer, he started following me around.

Breakfast this morning was a Strawberries N’ Creme scone from Panera Bread. Yet another b-day deal cashed in. If you haven’t joined the My Panera Rewards program, do it now for all sorts of free items throughout the year, not just around your birthday.

It was nice and moist. I saved some for Craig to try and he liked it.

My 31st year and blogiversary

Today is my 31st birthday and it is also my 1st blogiversary!

I am off of work for the next six days, which makes me so happy.

I enjoyed some coffee and my favorite Chobani yogurt flavor, pomegranate, for breakfast this morning.
