Friday recap

I got highlights and a haircut at a new salon. I loved my stylist and I’ll be back to see her.

I enjoyed some Aveda comforting tea while I waited.

The end result–a lot shorter (I think I got about two or three inches off) and a little darker, with warmer highlights like I asked for. This will be much easier to dry in the morning! As an added bonus, my husband prefers my hair shorter and he was ecstatic to see that I got so much off the ends.

I checked out the Outpost in Bayview after. It was my first time to that location and it was such a nice store. I liked the layout better than the Tosa one for some reason. I wish we had an Outpost on my side of town!

I liked how this church in Bayview said “kirche,” the German word for church.

After finishing one of the worst movies we have seen in a while, J. Edgar, we headed over to New Berlin. We split a chicken burrito for lunch and enjoyed some chips and salsa.

I like my husband’s happy Qdoba face here (he was brushing the salt from the chips off of his hands I think).

And yet another hubby shot–us reading magazines at the library. I felt like we were a retired couple just hanging out at the library on a Friday afternoon. 🙂

Then it was time for Starbucks’ frappucino happy hour! I had the new Mocha Cookie Crumble flavor to satisfy my chocolate cravings. I liked this drink because despite what you may think from the name, it didn’t taste overly sweet.

I liked the chocolate flavored whip cream too.

We ran a bunch of errands and then hit the gym to burn off those frappucinos!

Today flew by with a trip to the New Berlin Farmer’s market (opening weekend = a very small market) and more errands. We’re on the hunt for a filing cabinet for me and it’s not been easy to find one I/we like.

I’ve been eating a lot of junk today and we’re having salads for dinner to balance things out. It’s a miracle that my husband will eat salad because he never does. He liked the smell of the salad dressing I made in the shaker the other day and he just needed some “normal” lettuce instead of my regular spinach to convince him to eat a salad this weekend.

Time to go be productive and clean the house!

Santa, I’d love a ghd flat iron for Christmas

I got my haircut this morning. My goal was to get my bangs a little shorter and not so heavy looking. I’d say that goal was achieved. 🙂

My artsy instagram photo.

To show the smoothness.

I always explain what I do and do not like about my hair to a stylist. My pet peeve is that my hair starts out smooth in the beginning of the day and gets frizzy by afternoon. Since I have slightly wavy hair, it tends to curl up around my face as the day goes on. My stylist recommended getting a nicer flat iron like a CHI or ghd. I didn’t realize the ghd was so pricey and that’s the one she said is best. I’ve heard that feedback from others too.

Oh what to do. Anyone know where I can get one on sale? I’ll have to see if Ulta carries them and then I could use a 20% off coupon if that brand isn’t excluded. The stylist I had also recommended checking TJ Maxx or Marshalls for CHI. If they had ghd, I’d be ecstatic.

I wish Santa could bring me a ghd for Christmas this year. 😉 I think Santa really likes my hair smooth and pretty, but he also knows that I’ve been a costly girl in 2011 with many nice new items.

We’re off to a lunch at my in-laws this afternoon. My parents and sister-in-law are joining us too. My dad has never seen my in-laws house and my mom has only been there once. I’m excited for cheesy potatoes and green beans!

Have a fantastic Saturday!

New ‘do

I used a Milwaukee based groupon type coupon this morning to get my haircut at a new salon. I had a great experience. The salon owner cut my hair and she did a wonderful job. We had a lot in common, so the conversation kept going and I felt comfortable with her as a stylist.

After my cut was over, she touched up my lip gloss and cheeks and then took head shots of me. That is part of the salon experience there. I thought that was pretty unique and nice. Next week, I’ll be able to download the photo to my computer. If it turns out good, I’m hoping I can use it for my new gravatar picture.

So, how did it turn out?

I got side bangs, but didn’t go totally short. I think she cut off about two inches. I figured the new bangs were enough of a change for now. I don’t love my hair too short anyway. If I had an oval face, I think I’d go short all of the time. But with a round one, I feel like my face shape is just emphasized.

When I was out running errands after the cut, I did notice that I kept touching my bangs to keep them out of my face. I think if I hairspray them good enough, they won’t annoy me like that.

I think it will look better when I flat iron it. The stylist noticed that I have wavy hair naturally and that does tend to make my hair look frizzy on the ends. She didn’t flat iron it and just used a round brush while she blowdryed.

After my haircut, I went to A Gluten Free Frenzy, which was nearby. I don’t need to eat gluten free, but I think doing so helps colitis when I have a flare up. So, I checked out the shop to see what they had to offer. Like most gluten free products, the prices were high overall, but they had a really good selection and I am sure it is paradise for someone with Celiac Disease or a gluten intolerance. There were many familiar healthy food brands available like Bobs Red Mill, Amy’s, Pure Fit, Kind bars and Think Thin.

There is only one Ulta location in my area, so I went there to use my $5 off $10 or more coupon. I got this Kenra hairspray after seeing it recommended on another blog. I’m going to need it to control my new bangs!

Next, I stopped by Penzey’s to use a coupon for a free “teach” box (my second one, it’ll be great to use as a Christmas gift for someone) and I purchased some Italian salad dressing base to get the teach box for free. Craig and I loved the Italian dressing we had at Ann’s Italian restaurant last weekend and I want to try to recreate that.

Finally, I hit the mall, even though the weather was too nice outside to stay there for long. I just wanted to look at a couple of stores that I knew were having good sales.

I was craving a pumpkin based drink from Starbucks, so I got a Pumpkin Spice Frappucino. Trying on clothes had worn me out.

I hadn’t had whip cream on top of a drink for a while and it tasted yummy!

The only thing I tried on today that fit perfectly were some gray pants from the Gap. They had 50% off certain pants and with a $10 gift card, I got the pants for about $21. Fantastic!

It’s still gorgeous outside so we’re going to hike around a local pond. Last time we went there, we had bad luck with bugs, geese and deer on the trail. I am hoping we have a better experience this time!

Unplugging (sort of)

Since we are staying at a place that has no wi-fi, but offers beautiful scenery, a lake to look at every day, birds to watch, etc. I am officially unplugging this weekend. The only electronic devices I am bringing along are my kindle, cell, and iPod touch. I hope to do lots of reading of The Hunger Games, books on my kindle and catch up on some magazine reading too (Whole Living, Fitness, Health)! I can’t promise that before or after a run to the farmer’s market in town, I won’t step into the town library to use their wi-fi with my iPod touch, but I will unplug from blogging this weekend. I’ll be back on Sunday or Monday with a recap of the weekend!

Oh and here are my usual before and after shots of my haircut/color. I went darker and shorter. Trying to get away from visiting the stylist so much for highlights and get back to my darker blonde roots!

My new haircut is sort of a “lob” (long bob) which is hot right now. While waiting for my color to process, I did look through some hair magazines and tended to gravitate towards the lob. I didn’t ask for that cut directly, but did ask for it to be a bit shorter and a little more layered.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! 🙂

HRA and a haircut

Wow, can’t believe Tuesday is over! Now I just need to get over the hump tomorrow and the week should fly by. 🙂 My day really went fast because I only worked about 5 hours and then had to leave to go to my husband’s workplace.

We had our Health Risk Assessment appointments this afternoon. My stats were really good. Kind of bummed to hear that even though my cholesterol is excellent, because my mom has high cholesterol, I could be predisposed to have it someday. The cute lady that was my nurse today asked, “now how is your diet” and then proceeded to say things like, “what percentage of milk do you drink?” (Skim). She even drew me a little picture of a plate and said that half of my plate should be filled with veggies and they should be two different colored veggies. Has anyone else heard that fact about the colors? I guess I often get two different colors in throughout the day, but not in the same meal.

Breakfast was cheerios and almond milk with a cup of coffee. I kept my breakfast kind of light because I knew I would need to eat again soon.

I had to eat a snack around 9:45 a.m. because I had to fast for four hours today. I could only eat half of the cantaloupe pictured here, the whole wheat bagel thin with strawberry cream cheese, and the yogurt. The clementine and rest of the cantaloupe will be part of my lunch tomorrow.

On my way to my husband’s work, I grabbed our lunch because I knew that by 2:30, we would be starving after a four hour fast! Lunch was a ham and cheese Subway sandwich.

Also a Fanta & a cashew cookie larabar because I was still hungry.

After leaving my husband’s work, I went right to get my haircut and a partial foil done. I have to say that my husband is too cute when he said this before I left, “thanks for coming out here, wish we could have lunch like this at least once a week.” It would put me in a really good mood if I could see him in the middle of a work day. Love that I married such a sweet man who I enjoy spending time with and he feels the same way about me.

Pre-haircut/highlight/lowlight (in my opinion, needed a good cut with layers thrown back in and was too blond from the last highlight I had in January).

After (layers bumped up, hair thinned and highlight/lowlights for a more chunky effect–this is more visible on the other side of my head).

Feels good to have light hair again! My hair was never what I considered thick until recently and I really do need to get it cut more often to thin it out.

Dinner was the Greek Gods yogurt with raspberries and wild blueberry preserves. I wasn’t that hungry because we ate lunch so late.

I was so bummed because I thought Food Revolution would be on tonight and then it wasn’t. Boo. Can’t wait for the new one next week though!

Haircut & lunch with mom

I started my Wednesday with a mini bagel and strawberry cream cheese, with a side of cantaloupe.

Instead of going to work at my usual time, I got my haircut at 8 a.m.

Before leaving the house, Craig took a picture of my “before” hair.

Here is my after.

I really liked the new stylist I went to this morning. She gave me more face framing layers, even though she could tell I was scared of getting them back again because I have had very short layers around my face before and they didn’t look good.

In order to get free parking at the Milwaukee Public Market while I got my haircut nearby, I bought this delicious Door County Cherry scone at C. Adams bakery and had my parking ticket validated.

Love anything with Door County cherries in it! I snacked on it at work, because the cup of coffee I had while getting my haircut made me a bit shaky. I can’t wait to eat the other half tomorrow.

Lunch was with mom. She came to my workplace and then we walked to Subway for sandwiches.

I had half (and a few bites of the other half) a ham and provolone on 9-grain honey oat.

I am not a huge fan of black licorice, so I brought my mom the package I received from Newman’s Own Organics. I did try a few bites and it was really good.

Mom was in black licorice heaven.

Mom is a great quilter and sewer, so I asked her to make me a yoga mat strap. She brought it along today and here is the end result.

If you want to make your own, go here.

Since I went into work late, I had to stay late. I had some hot chocolate and an attune probiotic mint chocolate bar to perk me up.

attune bars

Yum! I really enjoyed the attune bar. I will be trying them for the next two weeks straight, so you’ll see a bar on the blog every day now. I hope it helps my tummy! I wrote attune when I heard about them through Meals and Miles and they sent me a week of raspberry dark chocolate and a week of mint chocolate probiotic bars.

I haven’t revealed this on the blog before–I have Ulcerative Colitis. I need all of the probiotics I can get. Having Irritable Bowel Disease is one of the other reasons I wanted to start this blog. Since eating healthier and exercising more in the last year or so, I have noticed a difference in how I feel with IBD. I am glad I can track what I eat every day and how I feel in general through writing this blog.

Dinner tonight was a falafel sandwich.

Dessert was a tofutti mint chip sandwich and some cantaloupe.

American Idol is airing their Milwaukee episode and I have to go watch it now! No sighting of me in the background of any shots yet. Bummer. 😦

Feeling pampered

I spent my morning getting pampered. Don’t you just love spa treatments and haircuts? I had a free “balancing treatment” for pre-booking my haircut today and it was so nice. The Aveda salons always have Chakra treatments and my husband says true Chakras cannot be achieved until you do years of meditation and yoga. I honestly don’t know anything about chakras, but the subject does interest me. I chose my Chakra based on the colors, design or words I liked on these flash cards. I picked three and then my stylist had me smell the three with my eyes closed. My final selection was Wisdom. She said I seemed happy and the card told her I could either be feeling very wise and at peace today (which she could tell I was) or I could be seeking wisdom. She then sprayed the smell around my head and did a scalp, neck and shoulder massage. Aaah, it was so nice!

Then it was haircut time! I never realized I had so much hair until it started to get thick in the back of my head over the last couple of weeks. When I went to see her in August, my stylist had asked me if I normally get it thinned out. Well I didn’t know, because no stylist ever told me they did that, but I guess I normally do, because she didn’t thin it in August and it got thick! This time, she got the back nice and thin and just updated my layers with a small 1/2 inch trim. I love a fresh haircut and style!

When I woke up this morning, I still felt full from the pizza and breadsticks we had last night! I still was craving pumpkin oatmeal and made myself a nice bowl before heading out for the spa. This was the first time I used Pumpkin Pie spice in my oatmeal and it definitely was the flavor I wanted to taste! I added Libby’s pumpkin, half of a banana, oats and then raisins, a spoonful of greek yogurt and nutella on top.

Craig has a friend over this afternoon, so when I got back, we cleaned as much as possible. I vacuumed, did the dishes in the morning, cleaned glass on windows and then so did Craig. Like a nice spa morning, I also love a clean house!

All of that cleaning left me hungry for some veggies! I made myself a nice spinach salad with fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, red peppers, cucumbers, hummus, sharp cheddar cheese, broccoli, and the last of Annie’s Asiago cheese salad dressing.

I’m indecisive about whether I want to go to the mall to check out the Banana Republic sale or if I just want to stay home to read, get caught up on things and organize in general. We’ll see…I am leaning towards shopping so Craig can hang with his friend all alone. But, then again, shopping can wear me out and I still want to get to the Y today.

Hope you are having a good Saturday!
