7.68 more miles on the Oak Leaf Trail

Happy Sunday–what’s left of it at least!

I made french toast for us this morning. Mine was topped with nutella, raspberries, and powdered sugar. Yummy!

Since the weather has been gorgeous here this weekend, Craig and I finally went on our first bike ride together of the summer.

I tried the Gatorade G Series Fit series today. I will get it free via rebate from Walgreens, so I figured it was worth trying and reviewing for the blog.

G Series Fit

First, I started with one prime bar since I knew we were not going too far on our ride. It was tasty.

We loaded the bikes onto Craig’s car and went to Silver Spring Drive to leave off where we ended our ride last summer on the Oak Leaf trail. Craig wants to ride the entire trail slowly over the years, which is fine with me because it also forces us to bike in areas we might not necessarily choose to, like today’s ride. It was nice, don’t get me wrong, it just wasn’t the most scenic (except if you count the bridge with the train above it).

The only snag we hit today was some water on the trail and we had to go around it by getting on some city sidewalks. Right before I took this photo, there was a mama duck with her babies in the water and they were so cute! I am sad I didn’t get them on camera.

We took a break at mile 4 and I tried some of the Melon Pear gatorade drink. Both Craig and I really liked this flavor.

However, this is kind of gross-my honest opinion: drinking gatorade in general brings to mind the awful colonoscopies I have had to have for the last three years. Psychologically, I hate the prep part of the colonoscopy and drinking gatorade or powerade is crucial to keep electrolytes in my body, I know this. You just get to a point where your stomach is so full and you can’t drink any more of the stuff. Drinking it today still conjured up those bad memories.

I also munched on a few almonds.

Craig (unintentionally) looking pretty serious as he ate a cherry pie larabar for some fuel.

We biked 7.68 miles in the end. Not bad!

Once home, I tried the Mixed Berry recover drink and it was my least favorite of the Gatorade G series fit products. The flavor was just off. I couldn’t even drink any more because it was so gross.

After having pizza for lunch, I was tired so I laid on the couch for an hour and crashed. Then I just read a book and magazine outside, made salsa, and did some housework.

Making salsa seems to be our new Sunday night tradition! This batch turned out better thanks to lime juice and fresh garlic. I added some lime to my woodchuck cider and it hit the spot. A nice summery treat!

Time to prep for the week ahead! I am hoping to get more sleep this week in general. Must get to bed earlier from now on.

Productive Sunday

I started off my Sunday by watching CBS Sunday Morning. I am always impressed by that show and the quality of the stories shown. Today, I was very happy to see the story on The Container Store and how they put their employees first over their customer, because they know that by paying their employees well, training them extensively, giving them good benefits and 401K plans, they’ll treat the customer right as a result. Why can’t more companies be like this? Too bad there is no Container Store in Wisconsin for me to shop at and support. I love their company philosophy.

I ate breakfast during the show–coffee with Stonyfield non-fat vanilla yogurt, strawberries, & chia seeds.

I went to the gym in the morning. On the way there, I wasn’t feeling too energetic. Per usual, once I got there and found the March issue of Natural Health magazine to read while working out, I knew that I would have a good workout. Before my workout, I checked out the top 25 women at the YMCA for the month of February and guess who made the list again!? Me at number 21 this time!! I couldn’t believe it, especially because I was off of the gym for a week and a half due to vacation. My friend Angie also made the list! Woo hoo! That news sure motivated me too.

I enjoyed reading Natural Health while biking for 18 minutes. That magazine is becoming one of my new favorites. I really should subscribe. Who knew that the girl who once resisted the “hippie” culture of Berkeley, CA while living there would become a granola girl herself! 🙂 Maybe adopting a more natural lifestyle comes with age?

I followed the bike with twenty minutes on the Cybex Arc trainer. Kanye West’s “Power” and the new Britney song have been fun to listen to at the gym. I was getting sick of some of my old music, so I cleaned up my iPod last night and deleted some boring songs off of it for good.

At the end of my workout, I spotted my friend Angie! We hadn’t seen each other in a while, so it was fun to see a familiar face. I hopped off the Cybex and did a few weight machines, free weights and abs using the Swiss ball.

I was so hungry while leaving the Y, so I grabbed a YMCA peanut butter cookie from my gym bag and munched on it on the way home.

Once home, I toasted some honey wheat bread and topped it with nutella.

I quickly showered, got ready for work, checked out how weird my cat was lying underneath an upside down box…

and finally, dessert was a small bowl of thin mints ice cream.

I got to work around 1:30. I only had to stay a couple of hours for an event.

At home, I found my husband in the cleaning/organizing mood. His productive mood also rubbed off on me. I vacuumed, put away laundry, picked up in general and then I got super hungry.

I couldn’t think of what to make for dinner, but thought of the ingredients we had in the fridge and suddenly craved a panini. My husband said that sounded good to him too so I got the ingredients out and got to work on making dinner.

My panini had ham, cheddar cheese, spinach, tomatoes, oregano, sea salt and a bit of Trader Joe’s bruschetta topping. Yum!

We use the calphalon panini pan to make our paninis. I love that pan and still remember that we received it as a bridal shower gift from my sister two years ago.

I was still hungry and in the mood to bake, so I whipped up some chocolate chip cookies.

They turned out ok. I followed the recipe and then it seemed like there was too much flour. So, I added another egg and then the dough was too sticky when I was rolling out the balls. Oh well. They tasted fine, but weren’t my best batch.

Here are the nutritional stats on the peanut butter and dark chocolate KIND plus bar. This is for Faith and anyone else who was curious after I posted about the bar yesterday.

Time to log off and get to bed. Not looking forward to this stressful week or working on Saturday, but am looking forward to when it’s over. I am just glad I have Tuesday off so I can go shopping during the day (I’ll be hitting up Banana Republic, Gap, & Ulta) and to the guided meditation class with Craig that evening.

Hope your weekend was lovely!

Change of scenery

Thanks to my twitter viewing husband who saw the tweet about it, I was able to find a cool program to attend at the library during my lunch break today. Hence the title of this post, I got a much needed change of scenery and it felt great!

So, the program I went to was an adult storytime in honor of women’s history month. I grabbed a turkey, avocado, tomato, and red onion panini from the cafe at the library and it hit the spot (I didn’t take a pic because I was talking to the storytelling librarian and I think she would have been confused if I whipped out my camera and took a pic of my sandwich). I also needed a change in my lunchtime food, since I tend to bring my lunch every day, sometimes that gets a little old.

Breakfast was really filling–stovetop oats with a whole banana, pb, and nutella.

coffee (in China starbucks cup); oatmeal with pb and nutella

I tried Weleda’s Lavender Relaxing Body Oil before my meditation session this afternoon. I think it relaxed me a little too much because I kept falling asleep! Anyway, Weleda sent me their Skin Food back in December and this time, I purchased the oil because I was so impressed with their natural products. I LOVE lavender, so this product is perfect as a moisturizer or as an oil to use before meditation or yoga.

Dinner was a pb and jelly sandwich on the only bread we had left–the ends of the loaf, which I usually find gross and give to the birds. I really shouldn’t do that as they weren’t that bad. I also had a Strawberry Banana Chobani yogurt.

Dessert was a mint chocolate ice cream sandwich (Aldi Fit and Active brand).

And I blogged before 6:15 tonight instead of around 8:30, so it’s time to log off, change into my yoga clothes and get to the gym for a relaxing yoga session with my favorite teacher.

Only one more day until the weekend! Woot woot!

Getting over the hump

Happy hump day! Only two more days and it’s the weekend. Is it wrong that I am already thinking about the weekend? It kind of stinks that I have to work on Sunday afternoon, but I’ll make the most of my Friday night and Saturday then.

Breakfast–plain old boring Cheerios and coffee. I didn’t feel like anything else.

cheerios, coffee

Snack at work was Nescafe instant coffee that I got free samples of through Thunderfap.com or one of those sites. I also had an Aldi trail mix bar. This bar is a bit sweet for me. I think I better look at the ingredients before buying again too.

Lunch was a whole wheat tortilla with refried beans, shredded cheddar cheese and of course, Frank’s Red Hot sauce. I also had a strawberry Chobani yogurt and added fresh blueberries to it. Dessert was a toffee Moser Roth chocolate bar from Aldi.

I meditated when I got home from work. Today, I practiced without my husband and I did well. I started out better than I did in the middle with controlling my thoughts. Don’t worry–I won’t talk about my meditation every day. I may just blog about any affects I have noticed from it over time.

Dinner was a banana with some nutella and breakfast taquitos. Blame my husband who buys those and was making them–I couldn’t resist the quick meal tonight.

I was going to go to the gym tonight, but decided I could really use a rest day to relax my body and also do dishes, organize coupons and read my book. I also had planned on (finally) leaving work early and then 3:30 hit and multiple e-mails came in that demanded my immediate attention. I wanted to go to Zumba, but that didn’t happen because getting out of work once again affected my workout schedule. And I wonder why I am counting down the days till the weekend.

When I was organizing my coupons, I realized I really need to find a good (cute) coupon organizer. Using the envelope system isn’t working so well right now. I think I am going to keep searching on Etsy.

So, it’s the part of the evening where Bill Bryson’s book is calling my name. Hope I don’t fall asleep while reading because I feel super tired right now.

Yoga, cleaning and a relaxing evening

I am finally sitting after having run around all day. I swear that my hour long yoga class this morning gave me tons of energy for the day.

Please excuse my lack of makeup 😉

Before yoga, I had my necessary cup of coffee and a light breakfast of a Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Chip Muffin. I never feel good with a full tummy during yoga class.

I went to yoga at the Y from 8:45-9:45 and it was great. I love when teachers change up their poses in yoga classes so it’s not so predictable. We did lots of different poses today and I felt strong. During my practice, I was thinking about how much more strength I feel like I have gained in general over the last month of consistent gym attendance. I still have my weak side and I like when yoga teachers like the one I had today let class attendees know that it’s ok to feel weak on one side and acknowledge it. Maybe one day I won’t be weak on my right side.

After yoga, I showered, did more laundry and then felt pretty weak. I get shaky if I don’t eat enough after exercising. So, I ate and ate until my stomach was satisfied. I focused on protein with a glass of chocolate milk, Chobani yogurt and a Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar. I was craving that ripe banana and Nutella before I went to yoga class, but I knew it would upset my tummy.

I got ready for the day and did a few things around the house. I also made it to the mall, as I had tons of coupons for stores, but only came away with a free Aveda shower gel that smells like lovely jasmine and rose. You get a custom blend product free for your birthday and my mom gave me her coupon. It was pretty funny because the girl who helped me kept calling me Mary, my mom’s name, throughout my consultation with her. I didn’t have the heart to admit it was my mom’s coupon and my name wasn’t Mary.

I didn’t stay at the mall for long. It was a rainy day here and the malls were packed as if it was Christmas time. I just want to do all of my Christmas shopping online!

Once home, I cleaned for a solid two hours. I did dishes, put away laundry, did more laundry, vacuumed, cleaned the oven top and put things away in general. I worked up quite the appetite, so I snacked on cheddar cheese, licorice and chips and salsa. I guess the theme of my meals today has been snacks! I didn’t have lunch because that 11 a.m. post yoga snacking session was all I needed. By cleaning non-stop, I accomplished my goal–not to have to do most of those tasks on Sunday so I could relax (except for ironing).

Craig installed a new sensor light today at the back of our house, so he was pretty tired from having some issues with our 1960’s electrical job. We decided to hit the local Subway for dinner to use a buy one get one free footlong coupon. I got ham and provolone on 9 grain honey oat with spinach, tomatoes, green peppers, pickles, black olives, lite mayo and oregano.

I ate half and then a few bites of the other half. I’ll have a nice sandwich to look forward to for lunch or dinner tomorrow. We want to get to our favorite Indian restaurant for Tikka Masala, Naan and Mango Lassis.

I won’t recap all of yesterday–I was too busy to blog. After work, I hit the gym and then we went out to eat at Qdoba and craved Kopps custard, so we shared a vanilla cup. We went to a really good lecture later at night and didn’t get home until 9:15 and I was beat!

Kopps has two flavors of the day and besides Turtle Sundae, they had an interesting flavor…Maple Syrup and Pancakes.

On that note, I am off to make room in my tummy for some chocolate monster ice cream and jet off to Sweden, via movie that is. 😉 I picked up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie at the library on Friday and we’re going to transport ourselves to Sweden for the next two and a half hours. I’ll let you know how it is tomorrow. I won’t be quite as busy as I was today. I just want to read the paper, watch CBS Sunday Morning, go to my first Body Pump class and then out to eat yummy Indian food.

Naughty kitties

We woke up this morning to hear a cat pawing at our door and meowing incessantly. Karma was ready for “food food” (they know the word for food) and wanted us up! My husband found this funny site about cats and while reading it on my lunch break today, I was cracking up. The last scene definitely could be Craig and Karma. I swear Craig wrote this cartoon about Karma, it’s so dead on. Check out more cartoons at this link: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/kitty_pet

Despite getting woken up a little earlier than normal, I wasn’t too tired once I was at work and I had a really good day.

Breakfast was a quick bowl of oats—instant strawberries n’ crème warmed up with skim milk and topped with a dollop of Nutella. Why did my husband pick out these instant oatmeal packets? They take me away from cooking oats on the stove, which is much healthier and less sweet.

Lunch (no picture, I think my camera makes too much noise in my office and I didn’t want to creep out my co-workers):

I got a grilled ham and cheddar sandwich from my work café. The chef started getting out white bread and I said “I know I am being picky, but do you have any wheat bread?” It was no problem at all for him and I made a trade-up with a more nutritious bread. Oh and I had a dill pickle. Can’t forget that! I also had a Peach Chobani and to satisfy my sweet tooth, a piece of English Toffee milk chocolate from Moser Roth (Aldi brand).

After lunch, it was flu shot time. If I didn’t get a flu shot, I think I would be really sick this winter. I used to get the flu every year and some years, it was just awful. I think my medical condition makes me more susceptible to getting it. It wasn’t all that bad, but the pain in my arm set in mid-afternoon and I knew I wouldn’t be able to go to yoga class tonight.

I opted for non-arm moving exercises at the gym. I biked for 22 minutes while reading Fitness magazine. Then I did the elliptical machine for 15 minutes. I chose the machine that didn’t require me to move my arms. I like moving my arms, so it was hard to get used to that style of machine, but it did make me feel like I was working my leg muscles more! I was bummed that my sore arm made me miss yoga, but I decided I’ll go on Saturday morning for the really tough class and that will make up for it.

I was hungry for veggies when I got home from the gym. I made a pretty big salad full of lots of green items-spinach, broccoli, green peppers, cucumbers. I also added feta, a few tomatoes from our garden and coated it with TJ’s Greek Style Feta Salad Dressing. I paired it with chocolate milk for muscle recovery. My husband had a free lunch at work today and he brought home a cornbread muffin for me. I had half of that too. I haven’t had cornbread in ages and it tasted so good! I will have to make it more often.

We made our favorite Trader Joe’s pizza-Four Formaggi. I had two slices and will have the other two leftover for lunch tomorrow.

I got an early start on my evening by hitting the gym right after work, so now I should go read some blogs and relax some more. The naughty cat Karma is curled up next to me, warming me up. He is fast asleep and probably dreaming of chasing mice…or of the cornbread scraps I fed him that ended up on his nose (so cute).

TGIF tomorrow! We’re going to a Dharma talk after work and maybe out to eat for Indian food (YUM)!
