Monday Monday, so good to me

Yesterday was definitely productive and one of the happier Mondays I have had in a while, mostly because I was free to do whatever I wanted.

I went to Penzey’s to purchase something so I could get an item for free. I got the Natural High Fat Cocoa that my mom loves and makes brownies with. Now I need to figure out what I am going to make with it. The cashier suggested a nice chocolate cake with raspberry filling.

Halfway through my errands, I fueled up at Panera bread. I really love their greek salad. I must find a way to make that salad dressing at home!

I found these new fish oil gummies at Target. Even better, I had a $3 off coupon, so they were pretty cheap. I am all about the coupons!

I tried two when I arrived home and they were yummy. They didn’t taste like fish at all, which is always my worst fear because I do not like the taste of fish. I like the gummy form vs. the pills because my doc tells me they are easier for me to digest.

When I arrived home, I found Gretchen Rubin’s new book, Happier at Home, in my door! I won it from her publisher directly and I am so excited to read it. I just have to get through a stack of magazines and some library books first.

I worked out in the afternoon and recovered with protein powder and milk in my new BlenderBottle. I added some vanilla stevia and it added that bit of sweetness it was lacking before. The BlenderBottle mixed the protein powder well and I was so full after having 19 grams of protein in a matter of minutes.

Craig and I took a very long walk after dinner. We spotted mice (eek) in a few yards. I don’t like rodents. Craig insists that they are cute. Yeah, not convinced!

I have been cleaning and doing laundry today. I need to get back to some of that and take a walk while listening to some fitness and nutrition podcasts.

De-stressing, yoga, and a cooking class with mom

I had a good, but busy Saturday.

I got up sort of early and had some coffee, finally made some breakfast of eggs, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, nutritional yeast, and green pepper, and got all cleaned up and pretty before my mom came over.

Since I ate so late, I was still feeling shaky and hungry, so I had a banana with some peanut butter. I love this Smucker’s Natural PB.

My mom and I went to the YMCA for community day, which was also free to the public but not well attended. Maybe it was the gorgeous fall weather we were having here.

I’ll most likely write some other blog posts about it later this week, but we were there for three hours and went to a de-stress class, yoga, and then concluded with a wonderful “Something’s Cooking” class. The cooking class teacher was also named Lisa and had a lot of similarities to me in terms of the foods she likes and other things. She made veggie burgers & banana quinoa pudding, both of which were so delicious. We also tried samples of boca burgers and soy sausages before trying the veggie burgers she made from scratch (recipe to come soon). It felt like we were spent a day at the spa (minus lovely massages), but it was all free! I love all things wellness, so this day was perfect for me. Now to find a job doing what I love that involves nutrition and/or fitness.

When we returned to my house, Craig excitedly presented me with a package and it looked like a book! I won this Joy Bauer book from Lynn at The Actor’s Diet. I am most excited to find that Joy has a chapter on IBS and also talks about a lactose free diet. It looks like it will be such a great book overall with tons of recipes to offer in addition to some very useful nutrition information. I always like Joy when I see her segments on The Today Show or have read her articles on nutrition in magazines, so the right person definitely won Lynn’s giveaway. ­čÖé

Joy Bauer's Food Cures

My mom brought over a pumpkin table runner she made me. I spotted a bunch of these while we were at their house last weekend and I picked out some fabric I liked. Isn’t it cute? I am not a big holiday decorations person but I do gravitate towards pumpkin things in fall and pretty, yet simple decorations at Christmas.

After the Y, my mom and I went to Penzey’s and the AT&T store to check out the cell phones.

At Penzey’s, I picked up this adorable “teach” box free with a purchase (I selected red and green pepper flakes) and a free jar of the Forward spice (Forward is the Wisconsin state motto). If you aren’t getting the Penzey’s catalogs in the mail, you are missing out on some great free spices or nearly free spices throughout the year!

Maybe Penzey’s is making a statement to support teachers this fall with this box. After all, they’ve been through some tough times in Wisconsin this year and the forward motto is very applicable right now.

There was also a small recipe book included in the box. Their recipes always look so good.

On the cell phone front, I am almost positive I’ll go with a general phone that only calls people instead of a smart phone. My mom will definitely get a general phone. I wish the smartphone Craig thinks I should get wasn’t so expensive at the store vs. what it sells for online.

Trying the vegetarian sausages at the cooking class today prompted me to pick some of these up at the store this afternoon.

I added them to some shells and I threw in some green pepper, olive oil and sea salt. It was delicious! Craig also tried it and enjoyed the meal.

Time to curl up with the cute kitty next to me and maybe read a bit before bed. Just another low key Saturday night around here.

Loving the farmers market veggies

My breakfasts and lunches have been kind of boring lately, so I haven’t been taking pictures of them. Lunches are basically leftovers of the meals below.

Last night, we made the corn on the cob that I got at the Farmers Market in Madison. It was delicious! I am glad it’s a vegetable I can make that Craig will also eat.

I topped one of my halves of corn with butter and Penzey’s spices. Then I just felt like eating it plain with butter and salt.

I also made some Mmmm sauce and quinoa again. I’m just a bit addicted to Mmmm sauce!

Tonight, I was craving veggies again and wanted to use some zucchini, but didn’t feel like doing anything elaborate with it. I just cut some up, threw it in the pan and cooked it up some red pepper, garlic, and olive oil and put it on top of a little bit of pasta and Parmesan cheese.

Breakfast this morning was red grapes, half of a banana chocolate chip muffin, and coffee with stevia. It was my first time trying stevia (I won some from a giveaway hosted by Allie at PickyEatingRD) and I thought it was ok. I have been using raw sugar lately and really liking the caramel flavor that produces in my coffee. But, it doesn’t seem to “melt” or blend well with my coffee.

I’ll try the stevia products again in some baked goods soon and let you know how i like it.

It was raining out tonight, so no walk outside for us. ­čśŽ I just went to the gym and lifted weights, biked while reading Women’s Health magazine, and ran/walked on the treadmill. Running felt good because I really got my heart rate up!

Recap of my relaxing Sunday

Yesterday, I started to feel rejuvenated. It took a day of rest at home, where I just put on sweats, showered, but didn’t do my hair or makeup and did not go to the gym. My body hurt so much over the last two days that I figured I could use an official rest day that didn’t require walking, rushing around to clean up a program, etc. like I had at work over the last two days. I did manage to wash dishes, do laundry and start using some of our new organizational tools.

I brought out this wonderful three tiered shelf for our kitchen cabinet (it’s from Target). I should have done a before picture, but picture them shoved on a shelf with no rhyme or reason.

Most of our spices are from Penzey’s and most were completely free because of the catalog I receive in the mail or other coupons. Sweet! They are awesome spices.

I hadn’t thought of it until reading A Better Bag of Groceries last week, but I alphabetized my spices. So simple, but it hadn’t even crossed my mind until I read her blog post about organizing her spices.

I started off my Sunday with some Raisin Nut Bran cereal and a big cup of coffee.

Lunch was a poached egg on an english muffin and some Stonyfield vanilla yogurt with strawberry rhubarb jam and fresh strawberries.

Dinner was pizza. We realized we had this huge box of pizza and breadsticks in the freezer forever and it was taking up so much room. I am kind of sick of pizza, but we couldn’t come up with a meal we were craving and didn’t feel like going out, because again, we didn’t feel like much.

After that, I just watched Amazing Race then the movie the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest for about an hour. We’re watching the rest of it now and I must go pay attention. A Monday recap is coming soon. It feels good to be blogging again after three days off.

Go Packers!

The game is on and I actually didn’t go to the gym during it. I’ll watch most, if not all of it and then head to the gym. Go Packers!

I started my day with a bowl of oats topped with fresh blueberries and chia seeds. I used my China Starbucks cup because I needed a huge cup of coffee. The cats woke us up at 6:15 and I couldn’t sleep anyway, so I got up. I figured it was better that way for waking up at 5:40 tomorrow.

Later in the morning, I snacked on Jessica’s granola and had another cup of coffee.

I headed out of the house to run some errands to Sears, Penzey’s Spices and Sendik’s grocery store.

At Sears, I got the Golla Lynne camera bag I wanted before our trip to Florida!

Before leaving the house, I used the Sears 2 go shopping site on my iPod touch & loaded the page showing the Sears associated CSN linked site for the Golla Lynne camera bag. They had a sale on the bag for $41.99 and Sears itself did not. I asked for the price match and got it. Sweet! The bag was “free” anyway because I got a Sears gift card from my credit card points.

Here is a somewhat fuzzy picture of the interior color and style. It is roomy enough to hold a DSLR camera and a lens (someday we’ll buy the big lens, I hope).

I like how the bag sits on my hip and doesn’t feel heavy. I think I will end up using it as a camera bag and purse on our trip. The front pocket has more than enough room for my purse items, as long as I stay minimalistic.

At Penzey’s Spices, I got this nice 1 oz. jar of minced garlic for free. Thanks to their catalog coupons, I have built up a nice collection of spices and most of them were free.

If you don’t already get their catalog in the mail, I would encourage anyone to sign up for it to get the free spices and excellent recipes inside. You don’t have to purchase anything to get the free spices either, so that’s an added bonus. The quality of their spices is excellent.

At Sendik’s grocery store, I found this very green and gold display, so I couldn’t resist taking a picture.

Those are green and yellow peppers packaged together.

Once home, I used some of the spinach I just bought to make a green monster smoothie. I put Silk almond milk, Whole Foods soy protein powder, a half of a frozen banana, some frozen pineapple and ice cubes in it.

I didn’t realize it until I was taking these pictures–maybe the green smoothie with yellow pineapple will be good luck for the Packers!

His and hers smoothies. I always have the large size. My husband doesn’t eat spinach in salads or on sandwiches, but I can get him to drink it in this smoothie. I have found through all of my green monster experimentation–I prefer the flavor of plain almond milk in the smoothie vs. skim cow’s milk.

I don’t think I have ever posted a green monster smoothie on here before. I always make them in the summer, but it’s hard to drink cold smoothies during the winter.

And I realize this post is getting very long, so I will end it with a picture of the pizza I ate while watching the beginning of the Packers vs. Bears game.

Later on, I’ll go to the gym for some elliptical, biking and weights.

The Pack is in the lead at 14-0 right now, so let’s hope we win the game! If you read my blog, you know I am not a huge football fan and neither is my husband. But, for the sake of my home state’s very dedicated football fans, I hope we win.

Brrr, it’s cold outside & a perfect day for soup

It’s a soup kind of day…with temperatures the coldest they have been all winter, my body craved soup this morning.

So, I pulled out some Minestrone from the cabinet and packed it for lunch.

I also had some grape tomatoes, pita chips and a chocolate chip cookie.

Morning snack was about 5 or 6 dried apricots and a Yogi green tea kombucha.

I got a big craving for chocolate mid-afternoon (blame it on the long email I had been writing compiling lots of stats and comments).

So it was off to the candy shop at my work. It was either milk duds or a $7.00 bar of chocolate that the cashier said was “just ok.” Milk duds it was!

When I got home from work, I found another package on our doorstep. It wasn’t something I won, but a package from Amazon which contained a yoga book for my husband and this book for me to read on our trip to Florida:

Karma wanted to read the new David Sedaris book because it’s about animals. I still have to finish the Larsson book, but will get started on Sedaris soon and just read two books at once. I need a funny book after this rough and tiring week! David Sedaris was on CBS Sunday Morning a couple of weeks ago and that man just cracks me up. I think I have read almost all of his books and my favorite is Me Talk Pretty One Day.

I finally made a quinoa dish for dinner tonight. It contained TJ’s organic quinoa, grape tomatoes, chickpeas, feta, mozzarella, dried basil, garlic and a few Penzey’s spices. I topped it with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a little sea salt. Every time I eat quinoa, I think to myself, “I need to eat this more, it is so good.” I love it’s versatility. I don’t think I have ever made the same quinoa dish. I just use whatever ingredients we have that go together well.

My picky eater husband even ate it! I think this is the first time he has ever had chickpeas. I told him they didn’t really taste like anything particular and he bought it.

And because I can’t stay away from this stuff, I had more of Jessica’s granola for dessert tonight.

Then it was off to yoga. My favorite teacher still wasn’t there tonight, but we had the teacher whose class I go to on Saturday mornings from time to time. Class was empty, but the gym itself was packed. Probably the most packed it has ever been since I have been going there for four months and I was surprised because the wind chill is probably in negative temperatures tonight.

Time to start reading the first chapter of the Sedaris book called “The Cat and the Baboon.”

Tomorrow, I’ll be blogging in the morning if I have time. I have to work mid-afternoon until midnight. Probably an eleven hour day and I am on my feet for so much of that time. After these particular events, I am just so tired all weekend and achy.
